The Last Guardian Is Still “In The Mix”, But On What Console?

IGN managed to grab a few words with Sony’s Scott Rohde and asked him about the mythical The Last Guardian, a game that has been stuck in development hell since 2009.

“You’re going to be very frustrated by this answer but it is 100 percent the God’s honest truth, and that is that we want to make great games,” said Rohde. “And when we see that the public is so interested in a specific game, of course that drives us to want to complete that game. But it also drives us to want to make it great. We would not want to ship that game if we don’t think it’s great.”

Rohde also said he was “not going to announce what platform it’s coming on, who’s working on it, who’s involved. But that is still a title that’s absolutely in the mix at Worldwide Studios.”

Not going to announce on what platform the game is on, eh? Shall we check the E3 trailer..

Skip to 4m36s and unless me eyes deceive me that trailer includes the text “Only on PS3”, so Sony have already announced the platform. The only possible reason for them not to talk about which platform the game is coming to is if “Only on PS3” has changed.

You can figure out the rest yourselves.

  1. Oh, Vita exclusive?

    • with touchscreen controls to stroke the bird/dog creature and minigames involving AR Cards. It’s going to be the new Eyepet….

  2. Fumito Ueda is a smart enough man. I can’t help but think he had the essence of the story nailed before pen was ever put to conceptual-paper. I do genuinely wonder if they hit a technical brick wall with the PS3 and were recommended to move across to the PS4.

Toriko/Trico looked quite complex with the modelling of movement, feathers, etc. I’m curious as to whether there were the resources left for the rest of the world once such a majestic beast had featured on-screen.

To be honest, it would be lovely to know what’s gone “wrong” so we can have our minds put at ease and just let them work their magic whilst we wait.

    • It’s a weird old saga eh. I’d love to know what’s gone wrong too, whatever problems they’ve come across, technical or creative, it’s bound to be genuinely interesting story. I hope we do find out, preferably through the medium of a violent Japanese mockumentary amusingly entitled ‘The Last Bourbon’, or something like that.

    • It may be to do with the way they’ve gone about ‘selling’ the storyline. Don’t get me wrong, ICO was a great game as I remember and you were just a kid running round with some mystical girl princess woman so The Last Guardian could potentially be great too and got a lot of attention… but, from another perspective (not strictly mine), if I was a publisher and someone said they’ve got an idea for a game involving a boy and large feathery catlike creature I’d be asking whats happened to the guns, tanks, zombies or large transformer type robots who tend to fall over a lot.

    • “Toriko/Trico looked quite complex with the modelling of movement, feathers, etc. I’m curious as to whether there were the resources left for the rest of the world once such a majestic beast had featured on-screen.”

Thats a good point actually, could be lack of power as whatever I saw of the beast reminds me of the movement from something in a cut-scene and not gameplay.

  3. Im sure my future grandchildren’s grandchildren will enjoy playing this game on release day…

    • I’m sure by then, cats & birds will have evolutionised, breeded & real CatBird things will probably exist. If I saw one, I’d kick it & run!

      • Hmmm interesting,
My Cat had feathers sticking out of his mouth the other day, having said that a few hours later they were sticking out of his rear end! Probably not evolving just yet then!

      • No, but after reading that my stomachs revolving.

      • Oops sorry, my bad :(

      • Nah, made me hungry actually.

  4. “Skip to 4m36s and unless me eyes deceive me that trailer includes the text “Only on PS3″, so Sony have already announced the platform. ”

Eh, that trailer is from June 2009…

The PS4 was released 4 and a half years later…

    • I see where you’re coming from but I think thats TC’s point.

      • And when I say TC, I mean Tuffcub and not the most tip top, Top Cat.
