Rise Of The Tomb Raider Is An Xbox Exclusive

TombRaider

So here’s some major news live from the Microsoft Conference as it has been announced that that sequel to the 2013 Tomb Raider, Rise Of The Tomb Raider, will be an Xbox exclusive and will launch next winter. So that means if you only own a Sony console then you’ll be left out of the show.

It’s a major coup for Microsoft especially considering how well Tomb Raider was received by the majority of people. In fact I’m really annoyed at the news myself, as I loved last year’s game and I don’t plan on getting a One anytime soon. The reason for this deal is that Crystal Dynamics needed a partner to push Rise to the next level, and Microsoft apparently stepped in.

UPDATE: Mike Adebajo of Square Enix has confirmed that the game is “100% exclusive” to Xbox, and over on the Tomb Raider Blog, Square have explained their reasoning behind the exclusivity.

Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past – we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

  1. Until when ? So was the case with Ryse and now it is coming to PC and even a PS4 release was hintes.

  2. Oh bugger, that’s a shame thoughiI reckon it’ll end up being a timed exclusive and come to playstation at some point.

  3. Sounds like shots fired….. They’ve definitely flashed the cash

    • “we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming”

Not going to happen when your exclusivity is on a console with 20% marketshare. Idiots…..

This decision could likely bankrupt this studio. Will Microsoft care? Of course not. They will carry on opening their wallets to anyone desperate enough to drink from the poison chalice.

Goodbye Tomb Raider it was nice knowing you..

      • It’s also an obvious emergency response to uncharted 4.

        The poor man’s uncharted 4…

  4. It’d still be suprised if it’s anything more than timed. Microsoft has a history of declaring timed exclusives as actual exclusives.

Think this would also release very close to Uncharted 4 so I don’t think Playstation gamers will be too worried if it’s only timed.

    • Surely timed, this game was announced at E3 to be coming to PS4 and PC as well.

      • Deals could have been struck in the meantime. I hate it when they pull this crap, just paying for it to not come to its competitor. Sales will surely be 70% lower, so im not sure how its taking tomb raider to the next level…

      • I guess sales on Playstation would have been down anyway- releasing at the same time as Uncharted given how similar in style they made the last Tomb Raider would not have been good for sales.

That, plus guaranteed money up front can mean a lot to a publisher like Square Enix. Still, even Mass Effect wound up on Playstation eventually, I can see this going the same way, especially as Microsoft aren’t the publishers like Nintendo are for Bayonetta 2.

  5. Bad move by square enix, ignoring your other install base is never good for you, when it doesn’t sell as planned they will then cut developers

  6. That’ll annoy a few people, though I expect it’ll be 6 months exclusive or similar. Though actually with SqEnix previously that tomb raider underperformed I can understand if they wanted help with funding to alleviate the risk.

    • I wonder if the Lara Croft game will take a hit on playstation consoles as a backlash to this announcement

      • Quite possible given the furious posts on their tumblr announcement. Though of course they may calm down by the time its released and give in to temptation.

      • It’s just before Christmas with a lot of another games out. I think it’ll be quite easy for most to give it a miss. I think other SquareEnix games could take a hit too as it’s not timed.

    • PS4 has uncharted4. Ps4 owners want give a crap about a wannabe game for xb1

      • Unless you have gone off of Uncharted. Like I have.

Uncharted was something new, good experience. Uncharted 2 was more of the same with a better story. Uncharted 3 just pretty much more of the same with pointless bits with Nate as a child.

Fourth one? Nah. Not for me.

      • Yep you clearly don’t care about it blightly, ha ha! Step away from the keyboard…

      • Totally agree with your analysis of the Uncharted series Forrest. One and two were superb but 3 was an experiment that went wrong.
If ND are following the same path and structure for UC4 as they did with the 3rd iteration then it’ll be consigned to the brown pile of tedium.
Obviously hoping for a return to greatness for the series 4th outing but if not then XB1 owners will have triumphed in this genre exclusivity fo’ sho’!!

      • Just wondering Blighty, if ps4 owners “don’t give a crap about it” because they’ve got UC4 how are SqEnix stupid to only do it on xbox? You’re contradicting yourself.

  7. From what i took from it, its exclusive next year holiday season but will then prob come to ps4 early next year

  8. Shame, Tomb Raider was excellent and I’ve been considering getting the Definitive Edition for my PS4. Not entirely sure that it’s a good move on their part, but I’m sure Sony will have something great up their sleeve later.

  9. Christ that must of cost MS a fortune.

  10. Boo-urns! BOO-URNS!
