What We Played #174: Forza Horizon 2, Murasaki Baby & Destiny

Is it just me or is Destiny utterly soulless in single player? It’s a fairly rounded package and competent in what it does but it doesn’t feel like it excels at anything in particular. Maybe it’s because I seem to be the only level 10 player running around in it these days and I just haven’t got to the good stuff yet.

It is pretty popular within the TSA Team though and I’ll leave it to Aran to start their stories:

This week I have played Murasaki Baby and Destiny. Lots and lots of Destiny. I wrote a review on Murasaki Baby,  and it’s a decent puzzler set in a weird world.  Short though.

Been playing Destiny a lot both solo and with quite a few of the TSA staff. Finished the story missions and my advice is read the grimoire cards if you want any sense. Playing in a group is much better than solo too. Got to watch Tef punch a strike boss to death.

Which neatly segues us into Stefan’s tale of his modest exploits…

Basically I’ve just been hammering Destiny endlessly, trying to get levelled up to the point where I can do a Raid. My favourite moment so far was when finishing a Strike and I leapt in to deliver the final blow with my fists. It was glorious, and Blair was fairly well positioned to capture the moment:

Just imagine screaming some crazed war cry as I kept into the fray, and you’ve pretty much got the idea.

Clearly not content with impromptu Sparrow races in Destiny (sparrow racing sounds like it should be a Belgian national sport!) Dom has mixed up his sci-fi shooting with some four-wheel drifting:

This week I’ve been playing Destiny. I did think it was amazing, but the shine has gone off it a bit as I’ve played it for the last couple of days and only got one useful piece of gear. This has seen a couple of my friends leapfrog me as I was stuck on Level 20 for ages. This did not make me happy.

I also tried the Forza Horizon 2 demo, which is pretty and loud, but fundamentally doesn’t seem to offer anything I haven’t seen in various other racing games. It looks like Driveclub or The Crew will be this autumns’ racing game of choice.

And bringing proceedings to a close this week is Peter who adds some two-footed tackling to our gaming exploits:

I’ve played a bit more of the FIFA 15 demo and I’m warming to it. I think it’s in need of a little bit more tuning because I’m almost sure that my initial reaction to the harder tackling was down to the added emphasis on player strength and weight – that’s how it usually seems to play out but I do still get the odd instance when a small, light player seems to waltz through tackles.

I’ve also played a bit of the Forza Horizon 2 demo, and it’s every bit as enjoyable as the first. It’s also really quite beautiful, running in 1080p at 60 frames per second. It has a slightly weird intro video that sounds like the sort of hippy pseudo-hypnotic crap you’d expect from a shoeless backpacker on a Thai island except it’s about driving cars really fast and partying to a bass-heavy soundtrack.

I’m reviewing both of these games over the coming week or so too, so expect plenty more about them on the site soon.

Has your copy of Destiny lost its lustre or are you having a riot of a time in your level 26 raid?

  1. Two game dominated this week for me:Borderlands 2 and Metal Gear Solid 1.
I finally played Borderlands 2 in co-op but I don’t have a lot of PSN friends so it’s a hit-or-miss thing with strangers. It is a totally different experience. If anybody wants please come and play.
MGS1 was a total surprise for me. I just wanted a game to get me in the series. All those MGS V trailers made me. And I fell in love with this old retro game. It is hard as hell but it is a blast. The game doesn’t tell you anything what to do and where, only hints. And the details: music, sounds, visuals. And bosses are hard as hell.

    • Add me bud PSN ID:Sm8ckhead.Exactly how it’s spelt,i know dodgy name.I started Borderlands 2 a while back but only played a few levels but no co-op missions.I did on the original Borderlands and it was a blast with mates so i wouldn’t mind getting into again.

      • Hi. I tried sending you a Friend Request but it says it cannot be delivered because of the recipient’s privacy settings.

    • Glad you’re enjoying MGS dude! Are you gonna plough through the series now?
Velocity 2x for me, finished it in the week, very good game.

      • Yes,I want to do the entire series. I want to know the whole story. But I’ll continue on my PS3. Sometimes you can feel the lack of the R2,L2 buttons on the Vita.
Right now I can’t decide to buy the HD Collection + MGS 4 or to go for the Legacy Collection. It depends if I find a good deal or not. But I am leaning towards the Legacy collection.
I can’t believe how much it got me hooked :)

    • Just sent friend request to pdannysan13 not if it’s the same but it has TheSixthaxis attached,if not i’ll change my settings bud.Sorry for the mess about.

  2. Been playing loads of Destiny this week, probably an unhealthy amount actually but I’m getting all this time in before I start uni again.

I reached the majestic level of 26 yesterday and even though the legendary engram drops in PvP are poorly dealt with – as in, I consistently finish 1st or 2nd virtually every game but the guy with a k/d of 0.09 gets the legendary engram and I don’t – I managed to acquire two legendary weapons last night during a patrol. One was actually rare that turned into a legendary rocket launcher which was pretty mad and the other is sniper rifle.

But the icing on the cake was finishing off my exotic bounty yesterday too meaning that I’m now the proud owner of my very own ‘Invective’ which appears to be the best shotgun in the game, win!

Just waiting for my mates to reach level 26 also so we can crack on with the Vault of Glass…

  3. Just destiny all week again :-)
I’ve hit level 25 and I’m close to vanguard rank 2 so I can buy some legendary gear.
I’m looking forward to eventually having a go at the raid!

  4. Played the Forza Horizon 2 demo a couple times, it’s brilliant. Great visuals, fun gameplay and a rock solid framerate (it’s “just” 30FPS BTW, but it’s a perfect refresh so it feels smoother).

Finished Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc, which is a very gripping game.

Did some Destiny last night, I agree the singleplayer experience is lacking.

During the weekend I played Forza 5, Fibbage, Mario Kart 8 and Mario 3D World with friends. All good games. Fibbage is especially entertaining, Forza does a lot right but the tracklist is tiny and the Mario titles are just excellent (but will ruin friendships)!

    • I’m Loving the Forza Horizon 2 demo it’s just more of the same which is what I wanted after loving the bejayus out of Horizon 1 can not wait to get my hands on the full game, also weather effects in a forza game! I have awaited this day for nearly 10 years

  5. I spent the week in the sticks, no internet or mobile signal, so my Vita came in very handy . Played a little each of Killzone Mercenaries, R&C Trilogy, Lego harry potter 2 and Velocity 2X.
Returned to ‘civilisation’ last night, intending to play Destiny but was tired after a long drive so eased into some Minecraft instead.
I’ll be playing Destiny most of today though, and probably every day until i go back to work tues. I had reached level 10 before my week away so i have some catching up to do now. Everything negative that’s been said about the game is true – and yet it’s still great fun to play and keeps drawing me back for more. Definitely better with others and doesn’t neccessarily have to be with friends either as i’ve enjoyed a few events with randoms too.

  6. Now that the Minecraft update has been loaded onto the PS3 I’ve tranferred all my saves over to the PS4, little annoying that you can only move 1 file at a time but not a major problem to deal with. My pyramid plateau is coming along very well.

Been also playing Madden 15, absolutely loving this edition. Think I’m definetely getting better. Playing on Pro at the moment and finding it fairly easy. Might even take the plunge and play some online matches although I’m sure i’ll get my ass handed to me when i do.

  7. Finally reached platinum and 100% on The Last of Us this week after completing Grounded mode, so thought I’d give Velocity 2x a crack. Pleasantly surprised by how addictive it is… So far I’ve perfected the first 22 levels. So long as the difficulty doesn’t ramp up too much I can see this being a fairly simple platinum :-)

Other than that, I’ve returned to Super Mario 3D World on Wii U to try and finally finish that last bloody level. With no luck. It’s insanely difficult. I can’t see me ever doing it :-(

    • Nice going, I had a quick go or three of Velocity 2X (Vita) and as you say it is a great little shooter, although perfection of levels passes me by so far with so many controls to master whilst doing the light fandango on the tiny thumbsticks! :P

      • Thanks! Yeah it’s probably easier with the bigger DS4 than the Vita. I’m making a point of perfecting a level before moving on to the next at the mo… Not sure if I’ll be sticking to that as the levels get harder but it’s working for now :-)

I do keep finding myself getting mixed up with the controls while trying to plow through a level as quick as poss though. Gets very complicated!

      • Well my strategy was to go in deep level wise with medium scores in the hope that I somehow upgrade and then return to the lesser levels with a more capable arsenal to blitz the perfection difficulty…just a strategy I usually adopt but we’ll see ;)

  8. Like everybody else i too have been playing Destiny,i’ve hit level 21 and yet no Legendary gear, got a Legendary ticket to decrypt after i done a STRIKE mission so cashed it in and got given an UNCOMMON item?…WTF man i was gutted.Just looking to level up so ican start doing those elusive RAIDS.
Also been playing Velocity X2 on the Vita, this game was made for the Vita as was the first one,it’s really fast paced and i love how you also come out of the spaceship to collect crystals and jump over obstacles. The only downside is i’ve put Persona 4 on the backburner,i’m sure i’ll get back to it sooner or later.

  9. Utterly hooked on Destiny. Even ventured into PvP to give me a break from raids. It’s ace and absolutely deserves all the high review marks it received…..sorry….it got what from The Escapist?
