Out This Week: Splatoon, Magicka 2 & Fossil Fighters Frontier

Greetings all, and welcome back from what was hopefully a fruitful and exciting bank holiday weekend. With the sun shining and those first few chimes of the festival season, no doubt (like us) you still found time to sit down and let loose with few of your favourite games.

This week, we’re putting the sprawling plains and beast hunting of The Witcher III behind us in favour of something more vibrant and cheery. Leading the vanguard is one of Nintendo’s boldest and most ambitious new games to date: Splatoon. If paint pelting really isn’t your scene then maybe Magicka 2 will take your fancy with its spellbinding co-op antics?

Ah yes, Splatoon. Having parted the hazy fog of initial skepticism, Nintendo’s newest IP is just a few days from release. Set in a vibrant world where paint is wielded as a weapon, Splatoon is arguably the publisher’s answer to the mass of shooter/action games currently flooding the market. Instead of succumbing to the lacklustre grey and brown sludge that inflicts much of the genre, however, Splatoon is bubbly and packed with that essential Nintendo charm. We’ll have a review for you tomorrow.

The original Magicka was one of those games that snowballed from humble beginnings to become a must-have title for PC gamers. Although fairly lo-fi in comparison to the platform’s heavy hitters, its intuitive spell combos and hectic co-op proved a massive hit with fans, prompting developer Arrowhead Game Studios to release a string of expansions and updates. In Magicka 2, you can expect the same strain of spell-blasting fun, optimised for PlayStation 4.

Sneaking in from the periphery, we also have Fossil Fighters Frontier launching exclusively on 3DS. Developed by Red Entertainment and Spike Chunsoft, its the first title in the series to launch on Nintendo’s new handheld. Combining exploration and excavation, Frontier has players unearthing a wide array of dinosaurs which can then be trained to fight in 3-on-3 battles. Keep an eye out – our review is due to go live this Thursday.

  1. Some of that stuff that should be on the PS store tomorrow is there already.

Magicka 2 is up (so if anyone wants to laugh at my spell casting abilities, from a safe distance, let me know)

And the 2 new Driveclub tours are up as well. As is Yet Another Street Fighter IV.

I guess someone at Sony got confused by the bank holiday and thinks it’s Wednesday already. I know I do. (And also, strangely, I think it’s Monday. And Thursday. All at once)
