Valkyrie Entertainment’s Guns Up! is one of the latest free to play titles to be released on the PlayStation 4, combining a mix of strategy and tower defence. There are two main parts to Guns Up! with those being to build up your own base so it becomes a difficult place to attack, while also attacking other player bases to gain resources and test your own troops.
The way to progress through Guns Up is to acquire the game’s currency known as munitions. These are used for everything from buying and upgrading items for you base to deploying troops in battle. Munitions are the main resource you acquire through battle, though the amount you get depends on the difficulty of the base you’re attacking and how efficient you are. There is a five minute timer for each base with the lower difficulty ones taking just over a minute, while well built strongholds will push you right to the final seconds.
Things are made slightly more challenging due to your munitions truck, which drives steadily towards an enemy base. This truck is where soldiers spawn from but if it is destroyed by defences then that is attack over. This vulnerability means constantly spawning soldiers isn’t always the ideal solution early on. Waste your munitions for that base too early by sending out soldiers quickly could mean that the truck reaches the base without any defence, and the base will win.
Sometimes sending out a couple of soldier waves to take care of advancing infantry is better, then waiting to for the truck to advance forward so your next waves are closer together so more combined damage can be dealt. There is no right tactic though because you’ll never truly know how someone has set their base up. Sure before you begin an assault you’ll see how many sniper towers and anti air units are at a base, but you won’t know where on the map they are. This means you have to think of the majority of your tactics while in battle, but that’s not where the preparation begins.
You see munitions aren’t just used to upgrade the base but to also buy card packs from the store. There are a few different pack types but only the common card pack can be bought with munitions. Other packs containing rarer cards require the use of gold, which is Guns Up’s premium currency. These cards can be earned when defeating bases too and each gives some kind of advantage.
There are attack cards which can give access to additional special items for an attack, like a bombing run or a higher unit cap. The amount of cards you can use in an assault is capped depending on your level. You’ll get perk cards that can be applied to solider classes to buff attack, health, and movement speed. If you get three of the same perk card you can combine them to create a higher level version. You can also combine any three cards and generate a random card in return. A lot of the time you’ll get a card you already had, but on rare occasions an Epic card could appear.
The type of units you can use is also capped, so you’ll start out with rifle wielding grunts, assault troops, and unlock grenadiers quite early, but medics and flamethrower wielders can’t be recruited until much later. However there is the option to rent them for an amount of munitions or gold if you so wish. Each soldier class has its own challenges, for example the grenadiers have a splash damage total challenge. There are missions too that refresh daily for you to beat. Again there is an option to skip the reset time by using gold.
When you go to start an assault you’ll have the option of selecting from different bases, each of which as a buy in cost of munitions. The harder a base is deemed the higher the buy in cost and the better the rewards on offer. However, I did find that you’d be offered the same bases over and over again, with a new one making itself known after a little while. This can make things feel stale and when there could be thousands of different set ups out there, depending on player numbers, it doesn’t feel like Guns Up’s full potential is being tapped.
Assaulting isn’t the only way to gain munitions though. After reaching level five you can initiate an assault on your base from the AI. The longer your base lasts against the horde the higher your rewards. On early runs don’t expect your base to last more than 90 seconds because it will be weak. Upgrading the defences, the soldiers, and the structures is the only way to last longer. It will take a lot of grinding to have a really good base and high perk equipped soldiers, unless you pay for the boosts and additional gold.
Guns Up! is a decent looking game with the hue of the base changing to give the impression of moving through a day. As you level items up their appearances change to make them look more intimidating. Generally it all looks a little cartoonish but in a good way. Guns Up! does sound decent too and there has been some good care taken to mimic things like the crack of a rifle shot, or the low drone of a plane as it flies overhead.
Guns Up! is a fun game in short bursts. The setting up of soldiers and perks before an assault is easy to understand and do, with the action never being too long to get to. It looks and sounds decent too, but Guns Up! doesn’t quite meet its full potential. There needs to be more options available for when selecting which base to attack, also boredom due to repetition sinks in over longer play sessions. Guns Up! is a free to play title and there is no harm in checking it out though. It is one of those games that you can have a quick session on, and with that in mind Guns Up! is worth a go.
