Skype Support For Vita And PSP To End June 22nd

Sony has confirmed that Vita and PSP users will not be able to use Skype on their consoles from June 22nd. In fact the Skype app is no longer available for download on the store, having been removed on the 22nd. However this will not be limited to Sony’s handhelds as the Skype site also states that support for Smart TVs will also be removed, and that the app will receive no updates.

In fact the FAQ states that on some TVs that the app could be removed depending on the TV manufacturer. The move has been done as Skype is now more popular on mobile, and that’s where focus will be.

Since 2010, Skype has delivered a great calling experience in the living room in partnership with several TV manufacturers. But over the years, users have changed the way they use Skype, with the majority accessing it from a mobile device – including when in the living room. We want to make sure we prioritize delivering the best possible experience to the platforms our users are asking for, which is why we’ve decided to focus our efforts in other areas…

  1. *grabs violin and plays a sombre tune*

  2. Next to go will be PS Store support! They may take our apps but they’ll never take OUR CARTRIDGES!!

    • You may not be happy when they disintergrate on their predetermined dates and steal your wife.

      • That’s the maddest thing I’ve seen you write :)

      • Can never tell with dem Sony folk. I heard, one time, they built a giant robot just to destroy all the unsold stock of the PSPgo. Apparently, they required some kind of Metal Gear to do that.

  3. well, sony are barely supporting the Vita, can’t blame those guys for jumping ship too.
