Stellaris Breaks Previous Paradox Interactive Day One Records

Every once in a while, a game comes along that really strikes a chord with its target audience, and Stellaris is just such a game for Paradox Interactive, as they announced that it sold 200,000 copies in its first 24 hours on sale and set a new day one revenue record for the company.

It’s an unmitigated success, that far outstrips the internal development studio’s previous grand strategy games, all of which had a historical setting. Admittedly, this announcement skirts around the fact that they had a very similar success with Colossal Order’s Cities: Skylines last year, which actually sold 250,000 copies, but that game’s £23.99 selling price is a fair bit lower than Stellaris’ £34.99, and Stellaris beat it with 68,000 concurrent players on day one. Either way, the game is quite happily sat at the top of Steam’s Top Sellers list, currently beating pre-orders for Doom, which is out on Friday.

Part of the appeal is the space setting and accessibility, which we highlighted in our review. Henrik Fåhraeus, Game Director of Stellaris said, ”Stellaris breaks a lot of new ground for Paradox Development Studio. It is a type of game we have never attempted to do before, and we are immensely satisfied to see this leap of faith work out well, especially with all the positive response we are getting from the players. We are listening very keenly to all the feedback we are getting and look forward to many years of continued expansions and improvements to the game. Let’s make space great again, together!”

In that vein, Paradox have already tweeted to say that they’ve identified the root cause of an issue which plagued me while reviewing, and will be addressing stuttering performance problems in the near future.

Oh, and just in case you were wondering how long it would take for total conversion mods to appear, there’s already an asset pack to transform the game’s races into those from Warhammer 40,000.
