What We Played #260: Uncharted 4, Pokémon GO, and Tropico 5

Given what’s going on in the world I spent much of the day trying to come up with clever gaming comparisons to various things. Is Brexit really like when SEGA left the game manufacturing business behind? Is campaign back-pedalling on the same level as Microsoft’s Xbox One U-turns? And are Nintendo really the Liberal Democrats? Well probably not, no. Either way, it’s heartening to have gaming as a form of escapism.

Coming from all corners of the globe, and taking in a range of cultures, races and beliefs, gaming at its best can be inclusive, moving, and intensely satisfying. You can play with people from all walks of life, from across the globe, and while admittedly you may often be shooting at each other, you’re sharing an experience. No matter what, with everything else going on, we can still all have that.

Tuffcub was the first to respond to the What We Played klaxon, and he’s still been blowing things up in Just Cause 3, while his friend has asked whether it’s called Just Cause because you have a just cause, or just ’cause you can blow everything up. Does anybody know for sure?! He’s also set to work on the Resident Evil 5 re-release on PS4, and thus far has simply remembered how annoying it is not being able to shoot and run at the same time.

New chap Jake has stuck to his guns – space guns – with yet more Destiny, though this week has been particularly bad for lag. Perhaps it gets worse the further you are from Earth? Miguel meanwhile is still in the land of the rising sun, and as such he hasn’t played that many games, but he’s put some time in with a friends new copy of Valkyrie Drive on the Vita, “which is a character action game from the creator of the hit ninja titty game series Senran Kagura. If Senran Kagura is Dynasty Warriors with boobs, Valkyrie Drive is Devil May Cry with boobs.”

Aran has been trying to get into Unravel but so far it’s not snagged his attention – see what I did there? – but he’s finding two of his other games equally challenging, with a pesky revolution happening in Tropico 5 while he’s stuck in Japan with no money in 80 Days. This has meant that Wolfenstein: The Old Blood has made for a refreshing change, despite the weak sneaky opening.

It’s been all about Uncharted 4’s multiplayer for Jim, “Naughty Dog delivered its first major content drop, delivering a variety of new gameplay and customisation options. Although the latter are a tad more expensive than I had anticipated, there’s a great selection alongside some welcome new tweaks such as a levelling system and changes to Ranked play.” He’s also fit in some time with Star Wars Battlefront’s Bespin DLC as well as Prison Architect and 7 Days To Die, with more to come on them next week.

Dave is getting prepared for his wedding this month but he’s found time to review The Technomancer, and play around with the beta of Pokemon Go. He also finished Inside in three and a half hours, which is apparently very thought provoking. Expect more on that next week.

Kris dropped in to tell us all about his time with Overwatch, “My first time playing Overwatch, and my brother very kindly guided me through it, as well as explaining exactly how to use Windows 10 as I got increasingly lost. I was pretty good with Reinhardt, even though he’s easy to play as. Roadhog is harder than he looks.”

He’s also been playing Hyperburner: iOS, a title that uses “low poly, heavily stylised graphics to replicate the sections from Rogue Squadron where you’re flying through tight corridors on ships. You don’t get to shoot, so it’s all about positioning. Super tough at times, and the addition of endless mode for levels once you’ve beaten them is nice. If it wasn’t so hard it’d feel content light for a premium title, but it’s got about 30 levels across six worlds and the harder ones might take an hour or so of attempts to crack.”

So what about me? I’ve been playing a lot of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, which is an absolutely brilliant return of a forgotten classic, as well as making a start on Star Ocean: Integrity And Faithlessness and LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens for review. Beyond that I’m still finding time for Monster Hunter Generations, and having the odd go on Monster Hunter iOS when Noah gets stuck.

So then, what’s been taking your fancy this week?

  1. Got my 104th platinum – DiRT Rally – which was one of the most challenging platinums I’ve had in a long while due to the constant restarting to perfect events.

Some Rocket League – trying to get a Painted and Certified item as part of the new DLC. Luck-based wank means no success yet after about 30+ games. Fuck you developers!

Started Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2. Didn’t realise there was so much focus on single-player, which is actually quite a nice layer to have over the first game. Not to mention the hub is rather nice too. Looking forward to playing more!

Finally finished my Veteran-with-no-checkpoints run on Black Op 3. Man the loading times and cut-scenes in that game drag on. So just a matter of 17K kills to grind across 24 different weapons for the platinum. Woo!

    • We should hook up for some PvZ GW2 action, I bought it for my son but I appear to like it just as much as he does!

      • Sure mate! I think McProley and I will on online this evening about 21:30 if you fancy joining us!

    • Dude, that is cruel – Veteran-with-no-checkpoints. I’ve played so many game genres over the years with trophy requirements that need shouting and screaming at but to have no checkies, not even halfway through a level/chapter, is pure torment and evil laughter!
      Buggers :P

  2. It’s Iron Banner week so I’ve returned to Destiny after some time off and am enjoying it a lot more after having had a month’s break.

    • Yeah, that lag is horrendous though.

There’s so many Warlocks and Titans nowadays too! Stormcaller and Hammer of Sol is OP.

      • I rarely experience lag at all. If you visit the forum everybody is always going on about this or that being over powered but honestly I think all classes are pretty well balanced right now.

  3. The usual Dead Island remaster with Forrest and Pixel and GTA online with Forrest, Pixel and heedbaw.
Aside from those it’s been Binding of Isaac Afterbirth, closing in on the final trophy (1001% completion), I just need to finish the boss rush and hush boss with 1 more character.

    • Update – 1001% achieved for Afterbirth. Now back to playing it just for fun.

  4. I got the platinum out of Ps4 version of South Park The Stick Of Truth and I’ve decided I’m going to the Ps3 version which I’m well on the way to platting too. Also I’ve had a go at Lego Star Wars The Force Awakens, which is good but I’m not too struck on the free flying, on tails flying feels OK but free flight it seems hard to control especially I’m playing it with my little one.

  5. I had only played the 1st area of Vanishing of Ethan Carter so i returned to that and have made much more progress since then. Having already decided this was a detective/mystery about a bunch of weird villagers i wasn’t expecting what i found in the mines .. or what found me.. :O

Also picked up Alienation, playing it on easy as i’m aware it’s supposed to be co-op and i want to see how far i can get solo. Seven missions in and so far i’m enjoying it. The way you get new weapons reminds me of Destiny and the weapon upgrade system is interesting too.

    • Problem with playing Alienation on the easier settings is you don’t get decent loot. Put it up to a harder setting, even playing solo, and you’ll get much better weapons.

Even solo, easy is no challenge at all. Suitable for the elderly and infirm, maybe.

      • I was thinking i could be missing out on better loot but then i picked up a rare gun last night so they do turn up in easy mode but perhaps not as often.
Anyway, just like Dead Nation, i will no doubt replay Alienation numerous times so i’ll carry on with geriatric mode for now. ;)

Question: I’m playing as saboteur, but i notice i’m picking up plenty of heavy weapons which i can equip but still can’t actually use. Can the saboteur level up to use these later on or should i just scrap them for resources?

  6. TC – Just ‘Cause =P
Dave – oh a wedding in a month…. you excited? Of course you are xD

Been playing Not Alone Co op with the wife and got 100%
Also played Grim Fandango and had to play it for the 2nd time due to Tank Controls trophy if only I knew that from the beginning, D’oh, ah well nevermind the game was fun and have completed it in like 3hrs and 18mins on my 2nd speed run with Tank Controls.
Currently playing Guacamelee and such a fun game that is. The PS Plus freebies aren’t that bad at all. Bring on Gat out of Hell xD

  7. My ongoing battle with XCOM turned better! :D Winning battle after battle after battle! only one code black and almost near the end! Just have to shoot down the Overseer UFO. More or less ready for my endgame. Will do another game once i’ve beaten it and with all the unlocked second wave options on. :D

Played Sniper Elite 3. I seem to suck at it. Then again, I am playing on Sniper Elite for a challenge so it may be that i need time to form my style.

Also, 95% misses!? DAMN YOU XCOM! OH COME ON! YOU DUMB BLEEEEEEEP! YOU MISSED IT! HOW THE FUC… STOP MISSING! STOP IT! YOU BETTER KILL THAT SECTOPOD WITH THIS ONE SHOT! YOU MISSED! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!?

    and

    *sees 4 cyberdiscs, 3 sectopods*

    FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK! I WANT OUT! *Cries*

  8. I’ve finally managed to sink some hours into Uncharted 4 and its fudging wonderful! I like all the gameplay aspects and the platforming has been especially good as ND seem to always have some incredible view ready for you to gawk at. It’s a beautiful game and the way it blends well produced cutscenes with the gameplay is very good. And a big surprise was the driving, the platforming in a jeep on that drive up to the volcano was really good fun. Love it, douze points!

  9. The new Halo 5 Warzone Firefight for me. It’s a brilliant new mode, although it’s crazy difficult and Deacon Pipap (aka Grunt Goblin) is a right tough nut to crack.

Also got roped into XCOM after Steven’s nostalgic rant last week. It so good, and it must be at least the fourth time I’ve played over the last few years. Just got to build the Gallop chamber and get some equipment for team, and it’ll be the final showdown.

Gonna do some more Halo and XCOM over the weekend, and also gonna try out Overwatch’s competitive update which landed early. Oh and hoping to try out The Banner Saga 2 as well.

  10. I’m currently enjoying a rather healthy DOTA winning streak, not sure how long it will last though…
