System Shock Remake Kickstarter Successfully Funded

With the constant clamouring for a remake or a direct sequel, it was only a matter of time before someone Kickstarted a new System Shock game. Having got off to a flying start when it was launched at the end of June, reaching half a million dollars of pledges in just 24 hours, it took until this past weekend for the crowd funding drive to cross the $900,000 threshold.

Pass that point it has, though, and the remaining 17 days will go toward reaching further stretch goal that will add limb dismemberment, more puzzles, RPG progression, weapon upgrades, Hardcore mode and more to the development plan. It’s currently pencilled in for release in August 2017 – though these dates always slip – with platforms including PC, Mac, Linux and Xbox One, but notably missing PlayStation 4. The team have since said that they’re starting to talk to Sony about that possibility.

The game is being remade by Nightdive Studios, a small team of veteran game developers, who have enlisted the help of Chris Avellone, who’s well known for his work on games like Fallout: New Vegas, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, Planescape: Torment, and more.

Perhaps the best thing about this particular Kickstarter, though, is that you can already play early parts of the remake in a pre-alpha build of the game. Available on Steam, GOG and Humble, it’s a welcome move that lets you see it in action instead of just having concept art and aspirational talk from noted developers to get you excited. Here it is in action:
