What We Played #265 Overwatch, Destiny & Brut@l

The launch of a new console is often a huge event, and based on Game’s lack of stock alone, it seems as if the launch of the Xbox One S has gone pretty well – before we start, yes, who can say how many consoles were released to retailers, or indeed if many pre-orders were left unfulfilled – and if it’s any indication gamers have taken their first step towards accepting actual mid-generation technological upgrades.

I guess that Sony will have been watching with interest to see how things went, as this isn’t as simple as a mid-generation refresh, where, if anything, features tend to be removed rather than expanded upon. No, this time gamers are given a few bits of bleeding-edge tech – albeit with no content to go with it – and that’s likely going to pave the way for next year’s Neo and Scorpio. Whether in the long run the One S is a short-lived stop-gap remains to be seen, but it feels like the landscape is shifting, or at least going to shift, and hopefully gamers will enjoy the possibilities that it will bring rather than focussing on the potential negatives.

Ha! Who am I kidding?

Anyway, I have thus far managed not to upgrade my Xbox One – though I may change my mind tomorrow – but then I don’t think I’ve even played on it this week. I have had to play some of the accursed Lego Jurassic World on PS4, but when my son loves it so much I really can’t complain too vehemently. I’ve also been tinkering away at Tricky Towers for our upcoming review, played some Monster Hunter Generations, and tried to get into Uncharted 4 a bit more but it’s been slow going.

Jim was the first to drop in, and he’s also been on the Uncharted 4 train;

“This week I’ve been playing the usual dose of Uncharted 4’s multiplayer alongside the superb Overcooked and Abzu. Overcooked was a game that really took me by surprise with its frantic yet addicting brand of co-op puzzle solving. The only bad thing I can think to say is that there isn’t more to gorge on after beating the game 100%. Abzu is a delight too but for different reasons. Think Journey but underwater with a meditative, educational twist.

Assassin’s Creed Rogue also fell into my lap by chance this week. Having strongly disliked Unity, with not much love for Syndicate either, I wanted to go back and play this missing chapter. Although still ridden by the series’ atrociously simplified combat (why did they change it in AC3? Why!?) it’s helping to fill a number of holes left completely unaddressed after the events of Black Flag.”

In between being told he had a nice ass, and generally enjoying himself in another country, Tuffcub didn’t once play on his poor neglected Vita, though that could be due to both enjoying plenty of time in the pool, and because there simply isn’t anything that compelling to play on it right now. He also played one match of Destiny, and deleted Ghostbusters, but obviously had far too good a time to do anything else.

There was another globetrotter this week in the shape of Tef;

“I got a little bit of Pokémon Alpha Sapphire played while on the 11 hour flight to California – can’t say why just yet, but you’ll hear soon enough once the embargo lifts – and was then disappointed with Pokémon Go not to get a Taurus from three 5km eggs that I hatched on this side!

Aside from that, I previewed The Turing Test, finally reviewed 10 Second Ninja X, made a brief and slightly bewildered return to Destiny, dipped a toe back into Rainbow Six Siege, and worked my way trough the games in Help! The Game, which is a collection of game jam games that have been created in aid of the War Child charity.”

Miguel has been playing some Gal*Gun Double Piece for review, a smattering of Overwatch, as well as some Team Fortress 2 as he’s got to teach a class on how to build levels for it. Besides that he also reviewed Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force, which is seemingly slightly less confusing than the name implies. Dave meanwhile has been playing Brut@l for review, as well as Pokémon Go and Worms WMD.

Now, what have you played?

  1. Platinumed Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 (platinum no. 106).

Played episode 6 (and part of 7) of Minecraft Story Mode….ep 6 was rather good but 7 is a bit average.

Had a brief go on The Division Underground DLC. I wish they’d stop changing how everything works, I’m totally out of touch with how the stats and things work now. Also the DLC just seems like a massive level 40 grind where you literally just keep drawing random mission after random mission(which will probably not turn out to be that random after a while). There’s no real end game it seems for the DLC, just another grind-a-thon. I also can’t remember the last time I found any weapon or loot where it was remotely better than anything I have – again you just have to grind to buy a schematic, then hope that you build the item (after grinding for parts) that is in the upper part of the brackets, and then (after grinding for money) recalibrate it to make it semi-decent. They’ve ruined it for the casual gamer and the traders have been pointless since about level 25.

Ooh, ranty! Glad I got that off my chest though.

    • Congrats on the plat ;)

    • Thanks for your view on the Division DLC. I was actually tempted to go back to it, as I really used to like the underground areas there. But the game started to feel exactly how you describe it, with no interesting loot, and a never ending repetition a while back, so I’ll better stay away now.

  2. Not a lot this week as i was catching up with the folks last wknd, played some more 7D2D and also enjoyed a few blasts of Ultratron, almost defeated 4th boss.

  3. Played quite a bit of F1 2016 beta, getting lots of laps and experience in the bag. Also some frivolities in Halo 5. Also just been to my local GAME store and set a decent lap at Brands Hatch in the wet on Forza 6 for a daily competition.

Very tempted by Rainbow Six Siege in the Xbox sale, so I might nab that and play some over the weekend.

  4. A bit of BF4 MP, some Blops3 MP and started Saints Row Gat out of hell; but mostly just Clash of Clans on my iPad, taking full advantage of a new clan and week long collector boost.

  5. I finished Uncharted! I doubt anyone is going to call the end a work of art but it was definitely emotional and heartwarming, what a lovely send off to Nate, Sully and Elena. The game was great, simple but fun and absolutely gorgeous, Ive never seen anything like that zoomed out moment on the domed roof before. Stunning.

  6. The usual Dead Island with Forrest and Pixel (and some by myself) and GTA online with Forrest, Pixel and heedbaw.
Still playing a lot of Binding of Isaac.
Fired up Diablo 3 again to check out the new patch.
Played a little Pure Pool, Terraria and PGA Tour.
Impatiently waiting for No Man’s Sky to download/unlock as I’m finding it increasingly difficult to not watch people play it on Twitch.
Also, I’m playing the “giving up smoking after 25 years” game … it’s going surprisingly well so far.

    • Good luck with the Giving up smoking after 25 years game,it’s easy after the first few levels i got the Platinum for the Giving up smoking after 20 years game roughly 5 years ago now,GO GET THAT PLAT ;)

    • Yes I’m Pixel here, I know how hard it is to quit smoking. I used to claim I was the expert in quitting smoking as I quit a thousand times. Just remember when it gets tough keep on quitting because it’s better to go through the pain now than later. I quit new year’s eve ’09 so it’s possible. :)

      • *I’m with Pixel. Sometimes I wished I’d proof-read my replies.

    • Good luck with quitting smoking, it’s on my bucket-list..

  7. More more more Dead Island with R1MJAW and Forrest, finnished Evil Within story and started Abzu,The Division with Forrest and Toutski minus a zerka :(,a little DriveClub Destiny and Overwatch a little Borderlands today and GTAV shortly with Forrest heedbaw and R1MJAW.

  8. Sorry Jim but addicting is not a word.

  9. Finished Everybody’s gone to the Rapture literally on my way out the door for my holidays, and enjoyed it a lot. Games start to grow up, and that’s a good thing. But that was even before this week.
Then played some games on my Vita, which I got on Plus and never got round trying. Unit 13, and some other game with a strange kid holding her balloon, but I can’t remember the name, but none of them were really that appealing.
Now I just started Firewatch, which is interesting, and I want to find out what’s going on. Somehow, I constantly expect a bear or a zombie jumping out of a bush in front of me…

  10. Manage to get away from Pokemon Go and have boosted up the PS4 for Arkham Knight and managed to get all riddles collectibles done. Just buts and bobs left then play the game again on Knightmare Difficulty and this time with tons of screenshots (Photo Mode)
