Bethesda Blame Sony For Cancelled PS4 Fallout 4 & Skyrim Special Edition Mod Support

Well that’s that, then. Bethesda have just announced that mod support has been cancelled for the PlayStation 4 versions of Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition, and they’ve laid the blame firmly on Sony.

In a terse update on the situation, Bethesda wrote:

After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.

Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.

We will provide an update if and when this situation changes.

The wording seems to imply that Sony were wary of the potential for certain kinds of objectionable content, but it could also simply be down to how drastically some mods can alter the game. On Xbox One, there are technical limitations, such as a 2GB limit to the mods you can load at anyone time, but modders have free reign to change various in game assets and lighting, and plenty more.

Fingers crossed that, by publicly putting the focus on Sony for this decision, they’ll reconsider and allow mods on PS4 in the not too distant future.

  1. Interesting. Little Big Planet contained user created content.

    • :-) That was used with MM’s own system. Mod stuff in Fallout is thrown together in a variety of ways, I believe.

Could easily be a security worry (for Sony) that’s preventing this but I’m not sure.

  2. Haven’t Bethesda traditionally been “a bit rubbish” when applying their coding skills to Sony consoles? In a sort of “well, it worked on something else, so we’re confused as to why it doesn’t work on a completely different system”.

Could well be for the best if Sony don’t let them do it, although maybe they should have made sure it was possible before promising it?

Did Fallout 4 release in a playable state on the PS4? Has it had enough updates to make it worth playing? Maybe when it’s bundled with all the DLC

    • To be fair, the PS3 had a very poor amount of RAM and that was a major issue for certain developers. PS4 Fallout seems to behave well and hasn’t really been a major issue.

Bigger Ram turned out to be a good idea.

      • PS3 and 360 had the same amount of RAM.

The reason why so many Bethesda games sucked on PS3 is because Bethesda didn’t actually make them. They would make the game on 360 and then outsource the job of porting to PS3 to the lowest bidder.

  3. Whilst consoles mods will have a long way to go if they ever take off and being limited is harming it, I would have liked to see what console mods would be developed by modders and if it would be recieved well or not.

However, this is a poor show from Sony and could backfire on them in a big way.

I rather use PC for mods. More variety, easier to install and a fair amount of sources instead of assumely, a single source that has limits on.

  4. *sings*
Dont blame it on Yoshida, dont blame it on Hirai now, dont blame Yoshioka, blame it on Nintendo.

  5. Don’t blame Sony of course, blame the clickbait hungry media that would have been all over the first dodgy mod. Sony are blocking this purely to prevent giving Sony haters (and Microsoft) ammo.

    • Perfect logic there!

    • Or maybe, just maybe, Sony are being arrogant about stuff like this and no-one would have gone “Sony? What the hell!?” if there was a dodgy mod. It would be “Creator! what the hell!?” and mods wouldn’t really be covered but maybe that’s just crazy talk and the media are in fact, out to get Sony.

  6. No EA access because Sony say it’s not good value, no xbox-playstation multiplayer because Sony don’t want it, no Ark Survival Evolved because Sony won’t let it release on ps4’s early access, now no skyrim or fallout 4 mods. Arrogant Sony is officially back.

  7. mother puss bucket.

    utter barstewards.

they don’t allow mods, they don’t allow cross platform play, they don’t support USB drives, they won’t allow Ark to release, they’ll only support BC if we rebuy the games again, now that one really pisses me off, especially after they shafted Europe with BC on ps3, “shortages”? bullshit.

they tell us we don’t want ea access, i mean i don’t, but fuck sony if they think they can dictate what i want.
i want to be able to play audio CDs for example, but sony don’t think i do.

well, no Skyrim for ps4 for me, and i know i’m not gonna be alone in that decision.
    i’ll wait till i get an X1.

and i will at some point, because they allow mods, they support external drives, they are more open to cross play, and the console will play bloody CDs.
oh and, when something releases on Xbox, it’ll usually release worldwide, why is it the american company actually seems to care about their worldwide audience outside the states, but the non american one only gives a shit about the us?
while playstation owners in Europe are lumbered with the shit show that is scee.

and i’m sticking with that 2017 prediction for KSP in Europe, or maybe it’ll end up like CS:GO and get lost forever in the scee dungeon.

between the disdain sony hold for anywhere that isn’t the US and their consumer last attitude, i’m hoping the X1 outsells the ps4 for quite a few more months, because frankly sony could do with a kick in the teeth to rid them of their recently rediscovered arrogance.

    • let me just say, this is toned down a LOT from what i want to say about this issue.
if i really let rip with my true feelings about this, it’d make that expletive filled rant about the EU KSP delay look like it was a genteel comedy written by Jane Austen in comparison.

i also wanted to add one pro for the Xbox, it has BC that lets people use games they already own, they don’t force people to rebuy them.
they give you that option if you don’t have the game, but they don’t force you to.

not sony though, sony thinks you should pay for the same game multiple times.
you could have the disc, but then you’d have to rebuy on ps3, and then rebuy on ps4.
tell me again why sony aren’t a bunch of greedy shits.
