Avalanche Software Revived By Warner Bros Interactive To Make Cars 3 Game

Remember Avalanche Software? It’s not to be confused with Avalanche Studios who do the Just Cause and Mad Max games. No, Avalanche Software was the studio commissioned by Disney to create the Disney Infinity franchise. The studio was shut down last year after Disney announced it was no longer funding its own studios to make games, which meant the cancellation of Disney Infinity. Well Avalanche Software is back but instead of Disney re-opening the doors it is Warner Bros Interactive, who are using the studio to create a Cars 3 game.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced that it will develop and publish the Cars 3 videogame, scheduled for 2017, based on the upcoming Disney•Pixar film. The game will be developed by Avalanche Software, which has re-opened under Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and will be led by John Blackburn. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has also obtained rights to the Octane engine technology, previously developed by Avalanche Software, which will be used to develop the Cars 3 title.

In an industry where studio closures are common it is nice to see one be re-opened instead.

  1. Disney shut studio making Disney game, re-opens as Warner making a game.. based on Disney.

  2. Great to see the talented company saved. Worry about the times scales involved, but better than shutting down everything.

  3. There’s a Cars 3?

Also, SHOVEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLL! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAREEEEE! (basically, you need to do an operaish voice when reading it). I mean, it’s a movie tie in game. Most were crap.

Hang on, if Disney owns Pixar, why are they outsourcing the game to Warner? Surely, they have at least one developer who can work on it?

And now i remember the fate of SplitSecond’s developer.

    Bugger.

  4. I guess one question is whether the fact the studio has been reopened and is working on a Disney franchise mean that there is potential that previously planned Disney infinity play sets could potentially still be developed and sold online via kickstarter or Online. Would remove the need for marketing expenditure and keep the franchise active.

Equally – could Warner bros be looking at developing their own infinity-based game for their own franchises (batman/superman/bugs bunny etc)

    • Nah Disney Infinity is dead due to financial problems, not because of studio closure.
