Gears Of War 4’s Latest Free Update Gives Horde Mode A Big Shake Up

Something big this way comes, as tomorrow sees The Coalition unleash their biggest update to Gears of War 4 yet, and it’s all for free. There’s the usual addition of two new maps – Avalanche from Gears of War 2 and Rust Lung from Gears of War 3 – but this update is really all about the Rise of the Horde.

There’s three new Horde Skills per class to collect – such as the Scout having the ability to cloak, while Heavies can deal more damage with the Berserker and Last Stand skills – with all skills able to reach level 6, making them even stronger. Season pass holders will get a gear pack containing five of these new Horde Skills. Defeating bosses also come with rewards, and waves 30, 40 and 50 will see them drop a single random Horde skill. Harder difficulties will increase the likelihood of a rare drop.

Speaking of which, there’s now an Inconceivable difficulty tier that ups the ante in both Horde and campaign. In campaign, there’s more of a survival element, as it’s not just you getting weaker. The enemies also have less health, but you have fewer resources, as weapons and crates have much less ammunition.

An Ironman mode gives you just a single life to try and survive the entire campaign, while in Horde, your no COG tags are dropped when you die, and a single failed wave means the end of your run.

The incentive to take all of this on comes in the form of 500G Gamerscore of extra achievements, spread across Ironman and Inconceivable, Horde and Campaign. The Legends of Sera achievement, for example, challenges you to beat the game in co-opp with Ironman enabled on Hardcore or above.

Last but not least, a free trial is inbound this month, running between 9th-15th June. It will offer up the first act of the campaign, as well as the full Horde and Versus mode. Since it comes out after the latest update, you’ll get all of the Rise of the Horde content, with a few special bonuses for new players. Just beware that after months of updates, the game is bloody huge now, and wants at least 80GB of space. I actually believe it’s pushed past the 100GB mark recently.

  1. This is big. Uber excited for this as I love the sniper class but reached the limit of upgrading. Great support for the game too, every month there’s something new.

    • Yeah, I’m really quite impressed by this level of support and consistency.

  2. Woke up to a PSN Ban for a month.
Guess I’m lucky to have Xbox 1 and will be all over Gears as it has been a while I think since January I last played Gears.
