Sony “Couldn’t Explain” What Death Stranding Is, Even If You Asked Them

Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, which is being touted by the man himself as a completely new game experience, sounds like it may just live up to that promise as even Sony’s top dogs can’t describe it. Chairman of Worldwide Studios Shawn Layden (the chap who made a brief appearance at Sony’s E3 show) was interviewed by The Telegraph and was asked about the game, and why it was not shown at the event.

“It’s up and running,” explains Layden. “It’s been aided tremendously after Kojima-San decided to co-opt the Decima [graphics] engine from Guerrilla [that powered Horizon Zero Dawn]. And, gosh, that really gave him a leg up to get up and running and test it and have some prototype levels running. I couldn’t explain to you what the game is…”

Layden goes on to say he has played the game, it actually exists, and that it is as revolutionary as Kojima has been suggesting, “All that and more!” he confirms.

Shawn also explains that Sony take a hands off approach with their big studios, such as Naughty Dog and Guerrilla.

“My job is not to tell people what games to make; my job is to create an environment where they can feel free to try everything. So far all the picks that Naughty Dog has made over the years have paid off,” says Shawn, adding that Guerrilla is  “another studio [that] I don’t tell them what to do.”
