Battlefield 1's Community Test Environment Comes To PlayStation 4 & Xbox One

No PC? No problem.

As games have focussed more and more heavily on online play, with millions of people engaging every day, it’s become ever more important to ensure that these games are thoroughly tested and stable. There’s always the risk that some bug slips through the cracks of a major content update or that a new character or weapon isn’t quite balanced, spoiling the fun for many until it can be fixed.

So many companies have created test servers for their games to help them test updates before a wider release. This really came to the fore after the debacle of Battlefield 4’s release, as DICE scrambled to fix and improve their game for console players, but the strange thing is that these test servers have almost always been restricted to PC, where quick updates can be made without having to go through certification time and again.

Battlefield 1 changes that, and PlayStation 4 and Xbox One gamers can now join the CTE and get a preview of upcoming content. The caveat is that you must have a Premium Pass season pass, but if you do, then simply head to the More section of the main menu and then follow the instructions under Community Test Environment. Ready yourself for a hefty download, as you’ll be installing the entire game a second time.

Recently the CTE has featured maps and content from the upcoming In the Name of the Tsar DLC, which is due out in September.

Technically accomplished as it is, I found this game to be pretty sterile and unfortunately got bored very quickly. I am tempted to have another look once the DLC finally surfaces but I doubt it’ll alter the whole B1 landscape.
