Nintendo Are Shutting Down Miiverse In November

Nintendo’s exploration of online gaming and social networking has always been a little bit of kilter, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t created some joyful spaces for players to explore. One of those, since its introduction in 2012, has been Miiverse, which was integrated as a way to share and leave messages in a myriad of games on 3DS and Wii U.

As Nintendo’s focus shifts rapidly to the Nintendo Switch, they’ve decided to shut Miiverse globally at 6AM GMT on 8th November.

Explained in their support pages, Nintendo cite the rise of other social networks as the reasoning. In fact, the writing has been on the Miiverse wall since they decided not to include the service on Nintendo Switch.

We started the Miiverse service in 2012 along with the launch of the Wii U system because we wanted to provide a space where users could share their feelings about games with each other. Thanks to users’ support throughout the years, we think we were able to achieve that goal. We decided to end the service at this time because, among other reasons, many users are shifting to social networking services.

The removal will be far reaching, with a full list of games affected to be found here. However, in the vast majority of cases, it’s an additional feature as opposed to anything integral. Perhaps the closest ties to Miiverse can be found in Mario vs. Donkey King: Tipping Stars, where the community feature will be removed, which affects the number of stars you can collect – it will still be sold, however. Further Super Mario Maker will still let you share levels, but you can no longer comment on them, Splatoon will no longer display the varied Miiverse posts in the plaza, and you’ll no longer be able to share Mario Kart 8 replays to YouTube, as it would also post them at the same time to Miiverse.

If you’ve got any treasured posts, you can preserve them, albeit without any of the comments from others. Head to miiverse.nintendo.net and register before the service’s end date. You’ll then receive an email to your Nintendo Account address a few weeks later that will include a URL to download your past Miiverse posts.
