The First Tempest 4000 Gameplay Video Has Landed

Atari have released details and a video for Tempest 4000 which is being created by Llama fan and gaming legend, Jeff Minter. Jeff previously released TxK on PS Vita and it was heading to PSVR and PS4 before Atari stepped in with legal action, and to me it looks like that  Tempest 4000 is really just an Atari sanctioned version of TxK.

Sure, it’s prettier and now features filled polygonal enemies rather than wire frame graphics and a new trippy background effect, but the gameplay looks almost identical. Now that’s not necessarily a bad thing, TxK was really good, I was just hoping for something new.

Key Features

  • Arcade Style Shooter: Blast down hordes of enemies in this fast-paced arcade style shoot ‘em up.
  • Fantastical World: Experience Tempest 4000’s mind-blowing and colorful graphics in beautiful 4K resolution.
  • Three Game Modes: Pick from three different game modes including Standard, Pure and Endurance that will push your skills to the limit.
  • 100 Levels: Progress and clear through 100 unique geometric levels by destroying enemies with various weapons and power-ups, and earn upgrades through bonus rounds.
  • Leaderboards: Achieve your high score and post to the leaderboards in your quest to be recognized as No.1.
  • Pulse-Pounding Soundtrack: Immerse yourself to a thumping soundtrack inspired by early 1990’s techno and rhythmic beats.
  • Old School Gameplay: Experience the traditional gameplay of the original Tempest with enhanced graphics on current-gen consoles.

  1. We got something new with Polybius. This is just TxK renamed.

And given how great Polybius is in VR mode, and how good TxK was, this is obviously an instant day 1 buy.

I just hope it doesn’t have the endless warnings every time you start the game like Polybius does. Press X 5 times to get past them every single time? Yes, I know my eyes will probably melt and my brain will give up and run away. I accepted that last time.

Looks like it’ll have his genius “restart best” feature again too. A great idea that effectively gives you an endless supply of saved games without having to remember to do it.

    • I bought Polybius for PSVR but only played it a little, it’s rather intense.

      • I bought it before I got the PSVR, because Jeff Minter.

And since I’ve had the PSVR? It’s my “I’ll have a quick go on that” game. Intense, yes. But also strangely relaxing after the first few seconds of throwing things at your face.

Certainly been helping me relax after playing RE7 in VR, which is a good thing.

And for some reason, you can play it for ages without feeling ill. Despite the speed of it. (Mind you, I don’t seem to suffer any bad effects from VR. Except playing Rigs yesterday before I turned off the things that are supposed to make it more comfortable)

      • The RIGS Comfort settings are very restrictive. Turned them all off.
