Valkyria Chronicles was easily one of my favourite games from the PlayStation 3, and it was such a shame that its sequels were either stuck on handhelds, trapped in Japan or simply ended up being a bit dull and uninspiring. Thankfully, Sega aren’t shelving the series, but have announced that Valkyria Chronicles 4 is in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, and it’s coming out in 2018!
It seems to be a return to the setting of the original, as opposed to the strange offshoot of Valkyria Revolution, and even takes us to the same war between the Atlantic Federation and the Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance in 1935 EC. Commander Claude Wallace and his childhood friends make up Squad E as they venture into Imperial territory only to find themselves faced with both an Imperial counterattack and a bitter early winter.
Not only is the story returning to its origins, but we also have the CANVAS engine’s watercolour inspired graphics returning and composer Hitoshi Sakimoto penning the soundtrack, just as he did for the original. Lastly, there’s a new generation of the BLiTZ battle system, which blends turn-based strategy, RPG and real-time 3rd person shooting. There’s some new ideas including a Grenadier class, offensive and defensive battleship support options and Last Stand actions before death.
This is really looking like it’s going to tick all of the boxes for me, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the series return to its best.
