Grainger Games Has Shut Down All Its Stores & Taken Down Its Website

It looks like UK retailer Grainger Games is done for. After ending up in deep financial trouble and looking for investors in the last couple of weeks, their website has gone offline and all of its store have now closed.

Eurogamer reported yesterday that an email had been sent to roughly a third of the company’s 67 stores telling them not to open. That email then went out to all the remaining stores this morning, and read as follows:

We regret to inform you that we require you to close your store imminently due to the ongoing issues surrounding the business’s critical financial situation.

Your store will unfortunately be closed as of today. Please DO NOT open your store this morning.

The business is still in discussions with potential bidders but unfortunately even though we have tried to avoid this situation your store could not be included as any part of any future bids therefore we have been left with no other choice than to cease trading as from today 28/03/2018.

Staff in your stores will be paid for all hours worked through until [Saturday] 31st of March and we require you to assist us with this shutdown process using those hours.

There will also not be any closing down sales, but rather all stock will be packed up and returned. Unfulfilled orders for games are a mystery, but sounds like they’ll be dropping into the void of the company going under.

This naturally means that the 400 people that were employed by the company are out of work as of this weekend. We naturally wish them all the best in finding new work.

Grainger Games is the latest victim in a fresh spate of retail stores folding in early 2018, following in the footsteps of Toys R Us and Maplin.

  1. Truly shocked by this. I felt like these guys were the last ones doing it right. They had a wide selection of titles, new and used had clear price differences and they still stocked new release Vita games. I even bought Danganronpa 3 from them only weeks ago.

It’s really sad and I will take many memories of buying epic games and having educated chats with the staff across many branches. Could they really not have been saved? Who is left out there selling games on the high street now?

  2. That’s a shame.
It always seems to happen just before a holiday.

  3. It always has to occur before a major holiday. :( I could be wrong but the only thing I can associate with these guys is a bizarre PR event featuring Condoms many, many, many, years ago. I believe Tuffcub reported on it.

How does Game get to keep existing whilst(What seems to be a solid retailer) GG doesn’t? I mean, is Game the Cockroach of the highstreet?

Hope everyone who got laid off won’t have issues getting a new job. I fully emphaise with them. Having to sign onto the dole after easter is really awful and I hope out of the 400, not a single person will be frced to rely on ze pittance.
