Bioware’s Casey Hudson has posted a short blog discussing thee studio’s next game, Anthem, and briefly mentions Mass Effect: Adromeda’s DLC which was cancelled after the game sold poorly.
“When I returned to BioWare last summer, Mass Effect: Andromeda had just been released and there was a significant movement among players asking for a story DLC that would answer questions surrounding the fate of the quarians,” posted Casey. “As you know, we were not able to deliver story DLC for Andromeda—this was as frustrating for us as it was for players, and it was something we knew we had to solve in future games.”
He describes this event as “a defining moment in refocusing BioWare’s mission” and that it had has made the team think long and hard about Anthem.
“We need to delight players with new experiences and innovation, but we must stay focused on the importance of the world, character, and storytelling elements that players expect from our games. And our games must be designed to continue delivering new stories and experiences, in an ongoing relationship with players in the worlds we’re evolving together,” he wrote.
He concludes by stating that Anthem will be “unlike anything you’ve played, but if we do it right, it will feel very distinctly BioWare.”

I understand the need to say this but Andromeda sold poorly because it was a mess.
Andromeda should have been their defining moment. Saying the DLC would have been a ‘defining moment’ is meaningless because no one will ever get to play it. I’m sure the canned sequel to Terminator Genisys would have been the defining movie in the franchise too… but we’ll never know because Genisys was trash.
I’m sure Anthem will turn out just fine but they have A LOT to prove after the huge disappointment Andromeda turned out to be.

He said the *cancellation* of the DLC was a defining moment. A “get your heads on straight” kind of moment.
The headline is poorly worded.
But BioWare has long put either core components of the game behind DLC (Leviathan and others) or at least put enormous in game taunts to show you what you’re missing (the Stone Prisoner sitting there saying “you can’t play this”)
It finally bit them, and left a huge hole unresolved.

I’m pretty sure he means that the DLC being cancelled was a defining moment for them – that would have been a big blow to the company having their main active project cancelled (and this ultimately lead to the studio being closed)
Which would hopefully mean that the part about “a defining moment in refocusing BioWare’s mission” means they are going to ensure that their games are of a high quality so something like that doesn’t happen again.
Time will tell though.

That makes much more sense, thank you :D

That reminds me I’ve still got MA Andromeda to finish, I’ll maybe load it up after I’ve done with Wipeout VR.

Expecting Anthem to be just another Destiny type cash generator with no soul.

I’m fearing that. I was expecting MA Andromeda like one of the best MA games, fortunately I can’t buy it in the exit and I asked some colleagues before, I was lucky.
Hoping Anthem becomes a fresh movement against “cash generators”.
