The excitement for God of War was at fever pitch in the run up to its launch, and so it’s no real surprise that it raced to 3.1 million sales in its first three days on sale, making it the fastest selling PlayStation 4 exclusive so far.
It takes over from Horizon Zero Dawn (we believe), which sold 2.6 million in its first two weeks on sale, though that is still qualified as the best selling new IP on the system and enjoyed a lot of success over the rest of 2017.
Compared to other platforms, Xbox One’s fastest selling exclusive was this year’s Sea of Thieves, though Microsoft have only disclosed the initial 2 million player count which includes Game Pass players, while Super Mario Odyssey did exceptionally well to sell 2 million copies in three days on Nintendo Switch, with the instantly recognisable plumber a must-have game for the fledgling console.
Santa Monica Studio’s head Shannon Studhill shared a personal message of thanks via the PS Blogs:

Your support is truly inspiring, and it’s a reason why we push ourselves every day to go beyond the boundaries of play. I’d also like to thank our Creative Director, Cory Barlog, and Director of Product Development, Yumi Yang and our entire amazing team at Santa Monica Studio. The belief in the game’s vision and the passion for storytelling across the team is undeniable.
