Something I overlooked in the middle of Sony’s E3 showcase, thrown in almost as an aside, was that Bungie released a story trailer depicting the death of the lovable Cayde-6 in Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion. We’ll not hear Nathan Fillion’s lovable roguish charms after this, but it begs the question, why are they killing off such an important character and one that helped give the first game a new lease of life?
After the first two expansions focussed on Ikora and Zavala, it was Cayde’s turn to be in the spotlight for Forsaken, but he doesn’t get to be in that spotlight for very long. “Cayde dying sets everything into motion.” explained Bungie’s Scott Taylor to the PS Blog. “We haven’t taken a player off the board like this before, and we realized that the loss of Cayde would mean more to the Player than any other possible external threat we could think of. All the ideas came together and formed what became Forsaken.
“Reaction to this has been all over the place across the studio. Some people are mad, sad, frustrated, excited. We think that’s appropriate. It’s a big deal, and we’re taking it seriously.”
And the character wielding the gun? It’s Uldren Sov, the Leader of the Crows from the Awoken in the first game. He disappeared off the map for a while, but he wasn’t seen as a bad guy, just a bit of an ass. Now he’s the main antagonist, alongside the escapees from the Prison of Elders, but we’ll have to wait and see what it was that turned him against the Tower and the Traveller. Bungie hope that linking these established characters together in such a dramatic way will give a more personal slant to the story in Year Two.
