What We Played #364 – Red Faction Guerrilla, The Crew 2 & Octopath Traveller

Hot hot heat.

Another week in the books, and we’re definitely in the middle of a summer lull. Or is that just the heat? I’ve been taking another shot at Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in preparation for this autumn’s DLC, and it remains one of my favourite RPGs of recent years. Besides that I’ve been plugging away at Antigraviator and The Elder Scrolls Online: Summerset for review, though my holiday has undoubtedly slowed me down on both of those.

Jason has been playing The Spectrum Retreat and 20XX for review, which will appear on Monday, as well as a fair bit of Dead Cells and Wizard of Legend, saying that they’re “both great roguelikes that occasionally drag me back in.”

Steve cleared the platinum in Lego The Incredibles which “managed to both feel far slighter than its predecessors and to exceed its welcome”. He also started South Park: Fractured but Whole, but he’s spent more time with his first whittling project with the knives and tools he got for his 40th birthday. “I’m hoping to level up that skill before the apocalypse sets in – reckon I’ve got a couple of years at best.”

It’s been a mixture of Red Faction Guerrilla, H1Z1, and The Crew 2 for Tuffcub, who also “loaded up this months PS+ game Space Overlords, but it crashed within seconds of the game starting. Rubbish.” Gamoc meanwhile has been playing Fallout 4, having decided to pick it up again after E3 gave him a taste, and some Absolver since it was added to PS+. “It seems good, but its multiplayer focus will ultimately result in me moving away from it. Yesterday I accidentally hit some guy whilst fighting NPCs and he started killing and reviving me over and over.”

Jim got Total War: Attila in the Steam sale, but says “it’s yet to really grab me”. He also went on a bit of a multiplayer binge with For Honor, Onrush which you can try out this weekend, and some Rainbow 6 Siege while blitzing through his Crushing run of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Aran has played The Crew 2 for review which he found entertaining, but felt it isn’t quite living up to its potential. “I’ve also started God of War and have had fun throwing my axe and enemies. It’s very good fun and looks amazing.”

Ade is still on God of War. “It keeps on getting better and better,” he said. “The integration of Norse Mythology into the plot is incredible. The way in which the traditional Norse narrative has been inverted to better suit the God of War universe is also very clever indeed. Then there’s the bit where Kratos has to return to the house to pick something up. No spoilers from me, but that bit had me punching the air in delight.”

From one god to another, Miguel has spent this week playing God Hand and is amazed by it. “Just…god…how have I not played this amazing game sooner?” he asked. He also started Dragons Crown on PS4, played a bunch of Overcooked with his girlfriend, and played a little bit of Hard Corps Uprising, which is “a super cool Contra game from Arc System Works”.

Last but not least, Teflon has been burying himself in reviewing Octopath Traveller on Nintendo Switch, finding a pretty brutal and challenging twist on the JRPG. Alongside that he had the fun times of installing Windows 10 again to try and fix a lingering issue, got in a bit of Fortnite on Switch, sampled the Battlefield V closed alpha, and shared his thoughts on the upcoming Jump Force and My Hero One’s Justice.

Now then, what have you played?

Sainsburys had a few games for £5 this week. Titanfall 2, Prey, Dishonoured 2, etc.. but I decided to give Mass Effect Andromeda a go. I’ve played all the others, so thought it’d be worth a fiver, despite all the negative reviews. Only a couple of hours in so far, but seems alright to me!

I tried Black Ops III as it was free on plus and i haven’t played a cod game since PS3. I didn’t like it. I also tried Absolver, really like the graphic style but the combat felt a bit too rigid for my liking. Hitting a statue was just as enjoyable as hitting an enemy.
So i mostly played No Man’s Sky and had such a lovely time i ended up uploading two new image gallery videos. Goddam this beautiful game that keeps on giving!

Finally managed to get some gaming time and been plowing on through CoD:Infinite Warfare… all side missions done and two main missions left. Honestly the end cannot come soon enough! I know any rational person would just stop playing but for some reason I refuse to be beaten by a CoD, no matter how dire it may be. Either way when it’s over I am so done with anything by Infinity Ward and future based CoDs in general.

On the plus side the 100 odd gigabytes (waste) of space it takes up will be free for me to be able to install Wolfenstein 2 and/or Rise of the Tomb Raider, both of which I’m quite looking forward to playing.

Played The Crew 2 and got the Platinum in under 30hrs was too easy and slightly dissapointed but the planes and off road were fun if I might add. Also played Burly Men at Sea and got the Plat on PS4 and Vita was very short and all right. Very easy Platinum with multiple playthroughs.
Also play H1Z1 daily and won on 5s again with TSA Tony and Tuffcub ^^
Going to try out OnRush free weekend play to decide if it’s worth a buy or not and can’t grumble at the 50% off on the PSN store so will try that out.

Gave some of the ps+ games a go. One was terrible. Zero Escape lasted 9 minutes before an ending occurred. But several hours of it after that so far. Weird fun, although I’m not sure what’s going on.

Absolver was weird too. Like the art style, but it seems to involve aimlessly running around beating up enemies, and sometimes accidentally finding a boss. Or a real person. Who may kill you, revive you, and then run away. And it’s a bit button mashy.

I also had a go at Destiny 2 while it had a free weekend. Better than I expected. Might just buy it.

Then Skyrim VR. Which was a mistake due to the weather. Melting my face for hours on end. Surprised how much of a difference VR makes, even if it looks a bit rough. Definitely playing it differently. Lots of archery and not looking down. VR spiders can fuck off though.

First I played HZD, which is good, but it didn’t quite lock me in as yet.
Then I had to watch some bad football by the team I supported, so they were chucked out. At least England stayed in.
Then I went back to Elite Dangerous, which is still incredible, even if I’ll never make it anywhere near any Thargoids. But going back to this game after a break, I always struggle to find out how to control my ship, I keep forgetting the layout with this one.

I started Gravity Rush 2 this week. While gorgeous it’s a slow starter, I’ve only just done my first side mission but it feels like a couple of hours in I should be out of the mining town and somewhere more mind blowing. Still, it’s got all the charm and polish from the first so I’ll be sticking with it.

I’ve been tempted by EverSpace in the double plus sale, has anyone tried it?

Mainly online gaming this week for me. Found out a few colleagues of mine had played a bit of GR Wildlands in coop and then stopped as their coop partners lapsed, just as me. So we banded together and are now working on finishing it.
I also started GTA online again, because a different friend of mine wants to get active there again and incited me to join him. Right before going on a week long motorcycle trip mind you, so i was alone for the week (in the game…), but in this time i managed to get an office and become a CEO, buy a club house and become an MC President, and start my very own cocaine business. Progress!

Started playing The Crew 2, Im absolutely loving it?!

Heard some poor reviews etc but I really enjoy driving across the map and finding loads of new “stuff” and locations. The upgrading (cosmetics) are decent and throw in motorbikes, planes and (so Ive heard) Monster trucks and that’s a pretty good game. Even better when I got it for 24 quid 😊😊😊
