Forza Motorsport 7 Is Ditching Its Version Of Loot Boxes

With the fourth of the very popular Forza Horizon series due out in October and Forza Motorsport 7 putting in a strong showing at the end of last year, Forza is currently on a bit of a high. However, as good as Forza 7 looked and played, it was muddied by the changes to the VIP membership, prize crates and limited use race mods.

Shortly after release, Microsoft backtracked on changes to the VIP membership, and now they’re tackling the continued negativity surrounding the prize crates. Essentially, they’re being removed from the game.

In a blog post, Turn10’s Alan Hartman explained, “One major area of discussion for the team has been prize crates. While we’ve never charged money for prize crates in Forza Motorsport 7, their presence in the game has continued to be a source of controversy. The overwhelming feedback has been that this system feels out of place in the game.”

While the initial intention was that they’d wrap microtransactions around them, that didn’t end up happening and Turn10 have now confirmed that they won’t be adding paid tokens to Forza 7 and they won’t be a part of Forza Horizon 4 either.

Of course, a lot of stuff was tied up in these crates, and so it’s going to take Turn10 some time to disentangle them from the game, expecting this to be completed by winter. This month they’re unlocking more than 100 of the previous “exclusive” cars by removing them from prize crates. At that point, prize crates will only offer driver gear, mods and badges, and so confer no advantage for online races. In the fullness of time, prize crates will be removed and all of those items will also be made available in a different fashion.

If 2017 was the year that fans pushed back against loot boxes, 2018 is turning into the year where developers spend months and months removing them from their games. After Star Wars Battlefront II and Middle-earth: Shadow of War, it’s now Forza 7’s turn.
