Dead Rising Developer Capcom Vancouver To Close

Five months ago Capcom decided to shut down development of their mobile game Puzzle Fighter, allowing Capcom Vancouver to focus solely on the Dead Rising franchise. “As the studio is dedicating its focus to our flagship Dead Rising franchise, we have decided to sunset Puzzle Fighter. The game will be removed from app stores on July 1 and servers will be shut down on July 31,” Capcom stated.

However, Capcom have now decided to cease all development at the studio. “As a result of reviewing titles in development at Capcom Vancouver, Capcom has decided to cancel the development projects at this studio and will concentrate development of major titles in Japan,” the company said in a statement.

Whatever work had been done on the next Dead Rising seems to have been consigned to the dustbin so I don’t think we will be seeing that franchise for a while. The studio closing has resulted in a loss of 158 jobs, although Kotaku reports some staff were already making their way to EA.

As ever, our thoughts go out to all those affected and we hope they land on their feet at other studios soon.

  1. On a personal level, I can’t say I’m completely shocked. I had a passing interest in the franchise but only in co-op. However, they took that away and never really fashioned a strong enough single player experience to hook us all in, en masse.
