Overkill’s The Walking Dead has been met with a muted response, “There’s flashes of what could have been, and there’s a chance that Starbreeze will turn this game around in the coming months to rebuild from a poor launch, but as it stands I couldn’t even recommend this game to the most hardcore of The Walking Dead fans,” said Thom in our review.
It seems consumers aren’t all that interested in the title either, at least in Europe and America. A press release from Starbreeze, Overkill’s parent company, states that “Initial sales revenues from OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead are lower than forecasted, primarily because the share of sales in low-price countries, such as China and Russia, is significantly higher than expected.”
“This is disappointing, of course, but we have a base to work with in regards to the number of games sold,” added Starbreeze Chairman Michael Hjorth. “We have a pulse of concurrent players, which is essential to future performance within the framework of our Games as a Service concept. The team is working at full capacity to deliver improvements to the game and new content, and Season 2 will be starting soon”
The press release also notes that $10m in revenue the company would get from the console version, which is being published by 505 Games, would not be realised until after the end of the current quarter, so we won’t be seeing the PS4 and Xbox versions of the game until next year.
A shoddy game won’t have helped sales, but interest in The Walking Dead has been waning for some time, viewing figures for the latest season are half of those of the previous season in the States.
