New Lord of the Rings game coming next gen with Gollum as its protagonist

A new game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings saga is coming. We feel it in the water. We feel it in the earth. We smell it in the air.

However, instead of commanding the armies of Middle-Earth or trekking through Mordor as a fearless ranger, you’ll be playing as Gollum.

“The Lord of the Rings – Gollum” will chronicle Sméagol’s downfall after stumbling upon The One Ring, presumably charting his cave-dwelling antics right through the events of The Hobbit up to The Return of the King.

Exactly how Gollum will play is a mystery though Daedelic’s track record suggests it will be a narrative-driven adventure, game. The team is still in early talks regarding its design and have yet to nail what aesthetic they’re aiming for though Gollum will run on the Unreal engine.

A provisional launch window of 2021 has been given, with PC listed as the only confirmed platform as well as “all relevant console platforms at that time”.

It’s a strange and unexpected take on a license that has been passed among several big-name publishers. Daedelic is no doubt wringing its hands at having the chance to explore this character and his dual personality in more depth than has ever been shown.
