THQ Nordic annouce SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated!

THQ have revealed the first of three promised games and it is SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated!

Are you ready, kids? The cult classic is back, faithfully remade in spongetastic splendor! Play as SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy and show the evil Plankton that crime pays even less than Mr. Krabs. Want to save Bikini Bottom from lots of rampant robots? Of course you do! Want to underpants bungee jump? Why wouldn’t you! Want to join forces in a brand new multiplayer mode? The battle is on!

The original version of the game, released in 2003, was published by the original THQ before they went bust. It was developed by Heavy Iron Studios but this new version seems to be handled by Purple Lamp Studios. It was released on PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube and features a story in which you defend Bikini Bottom from a robot invasion. In 2006 Edge magazine put the Game Boy Advance version  as number 34 in “The Century’s Top 50 Handheld Games,” and the PS2 version was number 67 in their “The Top 100 Games of the 21st Century.”, the positions dictated by the number of copies sold.

The game had rather average reviews but attained somewhat of a cult status and apperntly many people have been calling for a remake. So we’ve got one, rather than Timesplitters 4, you mad, mad fools.

THQ Nordic are set to reveal two more games over the next two days. Last year the revealed they had 35 announced games in the pipeline with the most recent financial report stating that has grown to 48 games. In total there are 80 games in active development, one of which is coming from Metro developer 4A games.

The company own a huge number of franchises now including Destroy All Humans, Titan Quest, Kingdoms of Amalur, Carmageddon, Red Faction, MX vs ATV, and Darksiders. They have cautioned that not all the IPs they have picked up will be getting a new game but many are hoping for a new Timesplitters.

In February this year THQ Nordic raised another $225 million allowing them to purchase even more developers and IPs.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated! will be coming to Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One in 2020.
