The Uncharted movie will hit cinemas in December 2020

The very long and tumultuous process of bringing Uncharted to the big screen took a big step forward today as Sony set a release date of December 18th, 2020. This is not the first time a release date has been posted for the film, originally it was meant to be out in 2016, then it slipped to 2017, and then it was removed from Sony’s slate completely.

The latest version of the movie-of-the-game will star Spider-Man’s Tom Holland as a young Nathan Drake, with 10 Cloverfield Lane director Dan Trachtenberg calling the shots. The script has been written by Jonathan Rosenberg and Mark Walker and will be set in Drake’s early years, a time that has not been explored by the games which allows the movie to go in any direction they want without spoiling the much loved PlayStation exclusives.

However, unless they completely ignore the games we’re unlikley to see Chloe, Elena or many of our other favourites. Sully will be appearing as he met Nathan when he was much younger, breaking bad’s Bryan Cranston is also rumoured to be on the cast so maybe that is the part he will play.

Previous versions of the movie were to star Mark Whalberg and had an “R” rated script packed with fruity language, and at one point there was the horrifying prospect of Seth Rogen scripting the movie. David O. Russel was originally attached to direct way back in 2010 with a script written by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheim.

“This idea really turns me on that there’s a family that’s a force to be reckoned with in the world of international art and antiquities… [a family] that deals with heads of state and heads of museums and meets out justice,” said Russell, speaking to Latino Review, in reference to the casting Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as Drake’s dad and uncle. Yes, that happened as well.

“We’ll have the family dynamic, which we’ve done in a couple of movies now,” he said. “And then you take that and put it on the bigger, more muscular stage of an international action picture, but also put all the character stuff in it. That’s a really cool idea to me.”

Sony recently announced PlayStation Productions, a new branch of the company which will create movies and TV based on favourite PlayStation franchises, and has a Twisted Metal TV show in the works.

  1. I’m wondering what take they will have on a young drake, as even naughty dog couldn’t make up their mind and retconned in an older brother for uncharted 4
