You have to love E3, and with Xbox’s press conference in full swing they are dropping an absolute truckload of games on us this evening, with Spiritfarer the latest one confirmed. It will be coming to Xbox One, Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2020.
The 2D title features some lovely animated graphics that call to mind some of Studio Ghibli’s work, with the trailer emblazoning the words, Build, Care and Learn how to say Goodbye. Coming from developer Thunder Lotus, it’ll be launching directly to Xbox Game Pass as well as Xbox Game Pass for PC.
Spiritfarer follows the story of Stella, the ferrymaster for the deceased on their journey into the afterlife. You build a boat to explore the world, meet and care for spirits and then eventually release them. Through this you have to farm, mine, fish, harvest, cook, and craft your way across mystical seas. There’s also a co-op mode where you’re joined by Daffodil the cat, which almost sounds like it should be an option for solo play.
Thunder Lotus have been joined by Creative Director Nicola Guérin for this latest project, and a statement sent out after the Xbox E3 2019 Briefing read as follows:
As soon as I heard the initial idea, it became clear to me that Thunder Lotus was where I belonged. It was as if it finally made sense, as if games could really be what I always thought they had to be. And this one would be just that. A game that matters, an experience that means something and has a purpose.
