Ubisoft’s E3 2019 Press Conference kicked off with Watch Dogs Legion, set (as was leaked in the run up to the show) in a near future London that’s falling apart in the wake of Brexit. Watch Dogs Legion will be coming out for PS4, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia on 6th March 2020.
As the cockney geezer narrator explains, the Government’s F-ed off, and the criminal underground has carved up the city, it’s up to you to fight back against the totalitarian regime. All of you. You can play as anyone in the populace, finding them, profiling them, and then completing their recruitment missions.
The gameplay demo started with skinhead Ian Robshaw chatting to an AI on his phone named Bagley – there’s the expected amounts of Jarvis-like banter here. They’re searching for a drone expert, looking to recruit into a resistance led by Dedsec.
Unfortunately it all goes wrong, Ian’s forced to go on the run from drones chasing him down, and he eventually gets a bit shot and dead in Trafalgar Square. Game over, right? Wrong.
And so we meet Helen Dashwood, an elderly ex-police hacker. She comes with a spider drone that can skitter through vents and hack its way into New Scotland Yard, oh, and some adorable old age pensioner stealth takedowns and tasering goons as she hacks her way to find that drone expert they’re after.
Mission accoomplished and the focus shifts to another character, Naomi Brookes, who has to try and find and rescue Jimmy at Camden Market. Cue some classic phone hacking distractions before she’s force to go loud and, in something that you’d only get in London after a social breakdown, a lot of gun battles with assault rifles.
It’s going to be fascinating to see how this works, but Far Cry 2’s designer Clint Hocking is leading this game’s development as well and promises that the game will flow around whoever you recruit, with the cutscenes adapting around them.
Watch Dogs Legion will be coming out for PS4, Xbox One and PC on 6th March 2020.

I was ready for the cor-bleedin-blimey-guvna voice acting, but I’m a bit disappointed it’s such an OTT future London. I mean isn’t London f’d up enough at the moment? It could have been a gritty true life setting, rather than yet another ‘dystopian’ metropolis. Reminded me of Homefront. Ridiculously unrealistic. Shame, because it was one I was looking forward to. Still probably the best thing in the whole Ubisoft conference though.

After watching the reveal trailer I wasn’t that impressed but the gameplay demo did impress me, being able to play as any character could be good. I hope you can take a ride on the London Eye, I’ve want to give it a go but don’t go down to London very often (ever). If not I’ll just have to wait until the ‘Whey Aye’ wheel is built.

This looked impressive, and fresh. And given how all those Brexiteers currently attack and insult anyone with a different view already and shamelessly poison any climate that would allow for a proper political debate, it doesn’t even look that far off at all.
