First details of Sniper Elite VR revealed

Rebellion’s premier Sniper Elite franchise is heading to VR, it was revealed earlier this year, but it’s only now that we have some details of the project through a behind the scenes look at the game’s development.

Sniper Elite VR is Rebellion’s second virtual reality game, following on from the Battlezone reboot that launched alongside PlayStation VR. It’s being developed in partnership with Just Add Water, and will be coming to PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, Steam VR and Viveport (so that includes HTC Vive, Valve Index and Windows Mixed Reality headsets). A release date has yet to be set.

It’s a standalone Sniper Elite game with a first person view that will have you aiming directly down the scope of your sniper rifle through motion controls – on PSVR this includes the Aim Controller. You’ll be fighting alongside the Italian resistance on a mission to take out Nazi U-boats around Sicily. If the key art is anything to go by, you won’t be playing as Karl Fairburne.

Don’t think you’ll be rooted to the spot, as the game will feature “free movement” using teleportation through the Italian maps, and you’ll have to lean on traditional stealth tactics from the main flatscreen series. Of course, it’s all about the sniping and they’re working to ensure that the gunplay and ballistics feel spot on. Oh, and there will be the series’ signature X-ray Kill Cam in VR for the first time.

This is just one game that Rebellion have in development in the Sniper Elite series. Announced back in March, they recently released Sniper Elite V2 Remastered, while Sniper Elite 3 Ultimate Edition is being ported over to the Nintendo Switch later this year. Most importantly for the company, there’s a full blooded sequel to Sniper Elite 4 in development that will be revealed in 2020. It’s probably going to be called Sniper Elite 5, but the more interesting question is whether or not it will be out before or after the launch of the next generation consoles.
