The Monster Hunter movie teaser trailer has leaked

The trailer for the Monster Hunter movie was shown at the Shanghai International Film Festival and someone whipped out their phone to record it. Obviously it’s not good quality but we do get to see a strange landscape and the star of the movie, Milla Jovovich, who has jumped from the Resident Evil movies to another Capcom franchise. Her husband, Paul W. S. Anderson, is writing and directing the Monster Hunter movie having also jumped ship from the Resident Evil movies.

The trailer also shows a monster bursting from the sand and a few of the other characters, one of whom seems to have a flaming hammer attack, but other than that the teaser gives very little away.

The movie is scheduled for release in September 2020 and was announced by Capcom last year. The press release described the film thusly:

Tentatively dubbed, MONSTER HUNTER, the film tells the story of two heroes who come from different worlds to defeat a shared danger, the powerful, deadly and magnificent monsters that inhabit the land. Along the way viewers will make new discoveries and encounter familiar faces and beloved characters from the games like the Admiral.

A later synopsis gave us a little more detail:

Behind our world, there is another — a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When Lt. Artemis and her loyal soldiers are transported from our world to the new world, the unflappable lieutenant receives the shock of her life.

In her desperate battle for survival against enormous enemies with incredible powers and unstoppable, terrifying attacks, Artemis will team up with a mysterious man who has found a way to fight back.

Tony Jaa, T.I., Ron Perlman, Meagan Good and Diego Boneta also star in the film which has been filmed in Cape Town and South Africa with a rumoured budget of around $60 million. Paul W. S. Anderson has said that the armour and weapons that the Hunters will wear are based on the equipment from the game series and that one of the characters will have a mis-matched set, to represent the customisation options players have within the game. Jovovich has also posted an image of a ‘slinger’ on her arm to assure fans they are keeping close to the game.

Principal photography was completed last December so the movie has over a year and half in post production to CGI in all the monsters than need hunting.
