Cast your mind back two years and you will recall that there was a VR ‘experience’ to go with the first rebooted Spider-Man movie. It wasn’t very good, “It’s horribly frustrating, because just as get to do the thing you’ve always wanted to do – swing through streets in VR – the screen fades to black and the credits roll. It’s a tantalising, second long glimpse at just how fantastic a full Spider-Man VR game could be,” said yours truly.
Well paint me purple and call me Cyril, someone was clearly listening as the new VR experience that ties in with Spider-Man: Far From Home does let you swing around the city! Sure, it’s not the best looking game on the planet but I am genuinely excited to give this a go this evening.
You get to choose one four suits, shoot webs from your arms and by throwing your arms out and back you woosh forward, just like actual Spider-Man. It’s not just swinging, there’s combat as well, although you will be fighting slightly generic robots rather than Elementals, assisted by Jake Gyllenhaal. It looks like you can fire out webs to stop the drones, and there appears to be a giant robot boss battle to end the experience.
The Spider-Man Far From Home VR Experience is totally free and is out today on Rift, Vive and PSVR. If you don’t own a VR headset and you’re in the States, you might find Sony Pictures Virtual Reality hanging around Regal movie theatres with HP Reverb headset and backpack PCs and you can have a go there.
