Bigben acquires Spiders (the game developer, not just a bag of arachnids)

Bigben are having quite a big year, announcing in the last few days that quarterly profits for the French publisher were up 20%. They’re putting that extra cash to good use, having bought up Eko Software in 2018 and Cyanide studio in May, and now acquiring Spiders. It seems that Bigben are determined to buy up every French developer they can get their hands on!

The 30-strong Spiders have historically worked with a different French publisher, though. Their previous six games, including Mars: War Logs, Bound by Flame, The Technomancer, and the upcoming Greedfall are all published by Focus Home Interactive. Greedfall will still be published by Focus despite the acquisition, coming out in September. That’s because Bigben will only complete the acquisition in September.

This is all part of an ambitious plan by the company, dubbed ‘Bigben 2022’, which aims to see the company lead the way in ‘AA’ games – not AAA, but AA. So they’ve expanded to now encompass six French and one Canadian developer.

Alain Falc, Chairman and CEO of Bigben said, “This acquisition fits perfectly with Bigben’s strategy to increase its know-how in the development of video games in the AA strategic segment. We are delighted to welcome the talents of Spiders who will strengthen our Development unit and participate in new and even more ambitious projects.”
