If it wasn’t bad enough for Twitch that Fortnite streaming superstar Tyler ‘Ninja’ Blevins jumped ship to Microsoft’s Mixer at the start of August, the company has now had to issue an apology for letting porn take his place for a few hours over the weekend, beaming X-rated content to the 14.7 million followers of his that decided to tune in. Classy.
The problem arose because, instead of leaving his account dormant as it should while he now exclusively streams on Mixer and is the norm, Twitch co-opted his account and used it to stream and promote other channels on the service. This wasn’t Twitch’s Host Mode, but rather a simple list of peak viewer-based recommendations with Ninja’s branding on the page. Turns out that porn’s quite popular, and so was clicking on Ninja’s channel to see what the brewing scandal was before Twitch took action two hours later.
In response, NInja released a video tweet that he was “disgusted and so sorry” for the incident. He continued, “As you guys know I’m streaming on Mixer now. There was a porn account which was number one being recommended on my channel. And I have no say in any of this stuff.
“We’re trying to get the whole channel taken down to begin with, or at least not promote other streamers and other channels on my brand, on my profile. So for anyone who saw that, for anyone whose kids saw that, I apologise, and I’m sorry.”
In response Twitch have now deactivated the accounts involved and issued an apology. CEO Emmet Shear said he “wanted to apologise directly to Ninja.”
He also said, “The lewd content that appeared on the Ninja offline channel page grossly violates our terms of service. We’ve permanently suspended the account in question.
“We have also suspended [recommendations on Ninja’s page] while we investigate how this content came to be promoted.”
So yeah, that happened.
