Death Stranding ‘features’ Monster Energy Drinks, J.F Rey sunglasses, and more

The Death Stranding Tokyo Game Show footage has revealed that the game seems to have product placement for the delicious, nutritious, and not at all really, really bad for you Monster Energy drinks.

Kojima has used product placement before, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots heavily featured the Apple iPod and another energy drink, Regain 24, was used to recover their Life as well as, depending on the environment it is consumed in, restoring between 25% and 50% of their Pysche. The Triumph Bonneville motorcycle was used in many of the Metal Gears and there were tonnes of other products in Japanese version of MGS4 including Doritos and Pepsi, but these were a ‘joke’.

After the Peace Walker press conference which included the likes of Axe body spray and Uniqlo t-shirts Kojima tweeted “Regarding the collaborations, I have one reason for doing them. It’s because I want to surprise players. If the surprise and freshness were lost, I would stop the collaborations. It’s different from Hollywood-****merchandizing.”

The Koji Pro twitter has also confirmed the tasty drinks will be in the game.

Monster are now strangers to video games and even had their own one earlier this year Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Videogame 2.

Monster are not the only products in the new game, clothing from Acronym (the shirt that Sam wears in his private room was designed by Errolson Hugh, the head of the brand), glasses and sunglasses by J.F.Rey, some of which you will be able to buy,  and RIDE.

Kojima has also been tweeting new artwork from the game including this rather stunning poster.

The creator of the game has, at least, explained how the game works and what it is about using straight forward language.

Death Stranding is a completely new type of action game, where the players goal is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society. All elements, including the story and gameplay, are bound together by the theme of “Strand”, or connection.

As Sam Porter Bridges, you will attempt to “Bridge” these divisions, and in doing so, create new bonds or “Strands” with other players around the globe. Through your experience of playing the game, I hope you’ll come to understand the true importance of forging connections with others.

  1. That poster is quite nice, but it’s got a little bit too much of the dreaded orange and teal thing going on. And is clearly influenced by Drew Struzan. (If you don’t know who he is, Google him and realise how much of his work you’ve seen).
