GRID’s latest trailer will “get your heart racing”

Codemasters’ Grid series revival is racing to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on 11th October, but what can race fans expect to find if they pick up the game? Well, racing, obviously… but what kinds of racing? Heart racing, apparently, given the title of the latest trailer.

OK, so actually it’s not cardiac a-racing, but still based around cars. The trailer features the Audi R8 racing wheel-to-wheel with a Honda CRX MightyMouse through the point-to-point Okutama Sprint race, then blazes a trail around Zhekiang and Brands Hatch, before demoing the Nemesis system when an SRT Viper GTS-R and Chevrolet Corvette C7.R bump bumpers one time too many. Finally, you’ve got the prototype Acura DPi and Cadillac DPi-V.R on the night time streets of Shanghai.

There’s a total of 104 events to take part in at launch, including challenges against Fernando Alonso and series nemesis team Ravenwest. The game’s all about delivering the spectacle that we remember and want from motorsports, but is deeply customisable with 400 AI personalities in the game. Each of them can be twisted by the game’s AI choreographer, adding little moments of excitement, whether it’s a driver feeling pressure and getting a bit of a wobble, mechanical damage knocking them out of the race, or something a bit more spectacular. If it’s you that makes the mistake, there’s always the series’ trademark Flashback mechanic to wind time back just a few moments.

As Game Director Chris Smith explains, “It’s about the unpredictable stories that happen in Motorsport; it’s why we watch motorsport on TV. It’s the drama and those the key moments that get you sitting on the edge of your seat. GRID isn’t about a procession of cars. It’s tight overtakes, bumper-to-bumper scrapes and competitive racing action. We want everything including the car to be able to tell a story at the end of the race through its bumps and scrapes. GRID gives players drama, excitement and unique motorsport stories in every race.”

We recently went hands on with the game’s full career for a few hours, and checked out what the multiplayer has to offer. Make sure to check out our hands on preview here.
