Get a look at PlatinumGames’ new Babylon’s Fall trailer from State of Play

The masters of the hack and slash genre, one of PlatinumGames’ many upcoming projects is the Babylon’s Fall. In today’s State of Play stream, Square Enix shared a brief new trailer for the game, before promising more details next year.

First announced at E3 2018, Babylon’s Fall is a brand new IP for both companies, but the two have worked together in the past, most notably on the critically acclaimed NieR:Automata. At the time of its announcement, it was pegged for a PS4 and PC release in 2019, though they’re obviously missing that target. We can now expect to see more of the game next summer.

With a setting that seems to chart the rise and fall of the Helos Empire across hundreds of years, it sports Platinum’s distinctive style of fluid action heavy gameplay. It’s also rendered with a new “Brushwork Filter” for its visual style. While it’s likely that the game is still destined for PlayStation 4, the added development time could easily see the game being pushed back far enough to be a cross-generational release, and land on PlayStation 5. PlatinumGames could potentially turn up the effects to the max on PS5, while happily scaling back down to a foundational release on PS4.

The renowned developer have been fairly busy of late, having struck up a running partnership with Nintendo during the Wii U era. There they rekindled the Bayonetta series, with a third game being backed by Nintendo once more as a Switch exclusive, though they also created Wonderful 101 for Wii U, worked on Star Fox Zero and Star Fox Guard, and earlier this year released Astral Chain for Switch.

However, alongside that, there was also the fantastic NieR:Automata and now Babylon’s Fall, and the fruits of their partnership with Sega a decade ago are being remastered. Bayonetta and Vanquish are being given the current gen treatment with a 10th Anniversary release for PS4 and Xbox One, it was announced yesterday.
