Media Molecule’s game creation tool Dreams has finally launched and the promised support for PlayStation VR seems to be nearing completion. Media Molecule’s Alex Evans and Mark Healey spoke to Eurogamer about the release and were asked what was next for Dreams.
“VR is in the pipeline and is actually nearly done to be honest,” said Alex. “I’d love to get multiplayer in there but we haven’t got a date for that as that’s not nearly done, but that’s one that I really care about as I designed the code for multiplayer from the beginning so I’m confident it’ll come out, I just can’t say when.”
He also revealed that along with free updates, one of which will be PlayStation VR support, that there may be bonus content you may have to pay for. “I imagine we will have paid content – maybe if we got Kojima’s Dreams, you know, if you’re reading this Kojima come on down and we’ll make Kojima’s Dreams,” said Alex.
They were also asked about other platforms which the game creation tool could run on, the obvious one being PlayStation 5. ” Dreams actually already runs on PlayStation 5 – there you go, that’s the scoop,” commented Alex, “But that’s just us being devs and exploring. I’d be lying to you if I said we weren’t going to explore, but there’s literally zero plans at the moment.”
That comment seems to crush any rumours that Dreams is to launch on PC as well as PlayStation consoles, at least for the foreseeable future.
Mark Healey also commented on requests to allow people to self publish games made in Dreams. “It’s a minefield, even before you start getting involved with the legal side with lawyers and things, just conceptually how do you approach it?” he asked. “You don’t spoil the atmosphere of people sharing and collaborating. So we’ve got a few different things we’re looking at. I’m sure there are ways. Tipping is an example – that’s one approach we can take. Which means people can still monetize things, but it’s not going to cut things off for people.”
