God of War camera hack reveals cheeky little Easter egg

We all love a good video game Easter egg. While some are fairly obvious others require a little digging, whether that means delving into lore entries, scrubbing through cut scenes, or taking a microscope to the tiniest little details.

Then there are those Easter eggs that, as players, we were never meant to find. Hidden in-jokes such as one that was recently discovered in 2018 PlayStation 4 exclusive, God of War.

YouTuber, Lance McDonald, managed to hack the game’s camera, allowing him to pull back the curtain to see things that were never meant for our eyes.

In a Twitter thread he focuses on God of War’s first boss battle as Kratos goes blow for blow with “The Stranger” who we later find out is Baldur.

According to McDonald, he was able to hack the camera by entering a special button press while accessing the game’s map. In doing see, he gets a cinematic spectator’s view of the fight.

What’s particularly amusing about this clash between the two gods is how it ends. After defeating Baldur, a battered and bruised Kratos drops him into chasm. However, if we look closer, we can see that some cheeky God of War dev has animated Baldur so that he gives Kratos two middle fingers while falling.

Again, this was something that players were never meant to see. One of the game’s biggest strengths was how it played out from start to finish without any camera cuts, keeping the action entirely focused on Kratos. Hopefully McDonald will continue to pick away at God of War, unveiling more of these hidden gems.

God of War has proven itself as one of the PlayStation 4’s best exclusives – we originally scored Sony Santa Monica’s reinvention of the series an 8/10. With the PS5 drawing nearer to release, we’re hoping that news of a sequel won’t be too far behind.

In the meantime, why not check out some more of Lance McDonald’s work – especially his videos dedicated to the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne, and P.T..
