LEGO Super Mario revealed as a barmy toys-to-life board game mash-up

After being teased earlier this week, LEGO Super Mario has been revealed as a crazy, but rather cool board game mash-up, combining Super Mario with custom LEGO and elements of electronic board gaming.

As you can see, there’s a lot of custom models and parts here, from the blocky Mario figure, to warp pipes, piranha plants, Shy Guys, Baby Bowser and more. Mario has a handful of little displays built into him, with eyes, mouth and chest all able to display his different emotions and changes of game state.

NFC technology will clearly be a part of this, with Mario earning coins on his chest when you bounce him off a Goomba’s head, boxes, and so much more. Oh, and you can set him on fire as well, which is kind of funny.

It’s a really interesting concept, and I’m eager to see how it actually works as a game, though it’s clearly designed for kind of role playing your way through a created course.

You can also bet that it’s going to be hella expensive. Not only is it LEGO, but it’s also a lot of custom kit and the small print at the end of the trailer indicates that what was shown included multiple play sets.

Julia Goldin, Chief Marketing Officer, EVP of the LEGO Group said, “We are very excited to bring Mario into the physical world through interactive and social LEGO play. With this experience we will help millions of kids with love for Mario to engage and play in a completely new way, where they are in control of creating and playing games with their favourite character. By seamlessly incorporating the latest digital technology, LEGO Super Mario is a highly social, interactive and collaborative experience for kids.”

Expect more details to emerge as the toys head toward release later this year.
