Stadia Pro subscribers get another three free games in April, including the Serious Sam Collection

Are you still playing Stadia? Well, Google certainly hope so, as with the arrival of April it’s another month, and Google’s Stadia Pro subscription is ready to drop three more free games into subscriber’s digital library. Top of the list for most people this month is likely to be The Serious Sam Collection. A…. collection….of….Serious….Sam….erm, games.

Anyone that knows the Serious Sam series – try saying that fast – will be all too aware of how un-serious they actually are, featuring Egyptian pyramids, giant scorpions and aliens, and lots of blowing things up. The collection draws together Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter and, in a surprise to no one, Serious Sam 3: BFE. Actually that one doesn’t have HD in the title so maybe that is a surprise.

As FPS go, they’re not the most nuanced of offerings, but if you’ve got a hankering for a bite more visceral fragging after completing Doom Eternal, maybe Serious Sam is the perfect dessert.

Besides that, Pro subscribers are also getting a pair of Stadia timed exclusives with the first being Spitlings; a fast, fun arcade game that you can play with up to four players online. On top of that there’s also Stacks On Stacks (On Stacks) that looks like a fun stacking game with an art-style somewhere close to a Katamari game. There’s some crazy stuff going on in it that’s for sure, with a sock monster that has a wrecking ball coming out of its mouth all set to wreck your lovingly stacked bricks. Subscribers definitely have no reason not to check them out anyway on the 1st of April when they drop into their collection.

Stadia’s continuing to get support this month, particularly from Ubisoft, with both The Division 2 and The Crew 2 launching for the streaming system, while exclusive Lost Words: Beyond The Page also arriving this Friday.

  1. Has it been announced how many subscribers there are and is it higher or lower than what Google predicted?

    • Officially, from Google, no. Which probably answers the second question.

The best guess seems to come from how many times the Stadia app has been downloaded. Currently sitting at “500,000+” for the Android version. Not sure how the Google Play store lists installs, but I think the next step up from 500,000+ is 1,000,000+. Both MS and Nvidia have 1m+ for their equivalent apps.

There’s the Apple version of the app too, but that’s about 1/3 of the number of installs (or was a while back).

And of course some of those app installs won’t be subscribers. Or might be subscribers installing on multiple devices.

So overall, somewhat less than a million subscribers seems likely. Possibly quite a bit less.

PS Now went from 700k actual paying subscribers to 1m in 6 months up to last October, and probably gone up more since then. With a bit of a headstart on Google, obviously.

I still think it’s got about 12 months to live, at most. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they never bother to do the free option either.

      • I don’t know you know.

I think it’s quietly filling a role, and building infrastructure. Sure, this stuff should have been in place at launch, but then none of the major consoles were, or are, feature complete.

I think the streaming tech across different platforms is a brilliant idea, with very little hardware to boot. It’s not going to replace your home console, but for some people I think it’s good enough to *be* their home console.
