In 2019 the Wall Street Journal published an article by Laura Parker which looked at ‘grey gamers’, the senior citizens who kick ass at Fortnite. “The Next Generation of Competitive Gamers Is … Over 60?” followed a group of over 60s who formed their on Esports team called the Silver Snipers who were featured at the Paris Games Show.
That article is now being used for the basis of a new movie produced by Ubisoft with Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, co-writers of Amy Schumer’s hit comedy I Feel Pretty, on board to write the script.
Ubisoft are also working on the movie based on The Division 2 which will star Jake Gyllenhaal, last seen as Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain, which will be directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde, The Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) and written by Rafe Judkins (Agents of SHIELD, The Wheel of Time). Academy Award winner Stephen Gaghan had previously been attached to the project as both writer and director.
Matt Phelps, VP of Ubisoft’s Motion Pictures, said “Attaching Jake and Jessica is part of our development philosophy of working closely with top talent from the earliest stages to collaborate on a high quality film.”
The movie will follow the plot of the game, set in the near future where a virus has spread via contaminated cash on Black Friday, decimating New York City and killing millions of people. It’s up to The Division to save the day and “what remains of society.”
You may be surprised to know that Ubisoft are also behind Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, the RPG comedy which is exclusive to Apple+. Also in the works are a Rabbids Invasion special set on Mars, a Ray-man show, Hungry Shark Squad based on the mobile game Hungry Shark, an animated Watch Dogs show for teens, and Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Vibe which is based on the Far Cry 3 expansion Blood Dragon.
