Red Dead Redemption 2 joins Xbox Game Pass in May

Microsoft have scored one of the biggest games of the generation to join their Xbox Game Pass game subscription service. Rockstar’s Western magnum opus Red Dead Redemption 2 will be joining the Game Pass for Console library on 7th May.

A prequel to the 2011 hit Red Dead Redemption, the game takes place in 1899 as Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang find themselves on the run, trying to rob, steal and fight their way across America, hoping to scratch together just enough money to set themselves up for good. Of course, this being an epic crime drama, there’s divisions in the gang and you have to choose whether to stick with your own ideals or stay loyal to the gang and Dutch’s plan.

With the game a behemoth two Blu-ray disc release and well over 100GB in size, Xbox are wisely letting eager cowboys pre-download the game to their consoles via the Xbox Game Pass mobile app.

We gave the game a glowing review when it launched in 2018, Ade saying:

“The hype being created for Red Dead Redemption 2 and the expectations of the passionate fan-base made a part of me believe that Rockstar Games could never deliver on all of their many promises. They did, and then some. From the feeling of a realistic living world they’ve created to the emotional bonds you build, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the video game experience of this generation.”

That hype saw the game racing to the top of the charts, with over 17 million copies sold in just 8 days and 25 million by the middle of 2019. The game also arrived on PC at the end of November, and despite a few launch hiccups, was another note of success for Rockstar.

The single player story mode also comes alongside the shared world of Red Dead Online, where you create your own character and try to forge your own path, as a Bounty hunter, Trader, Collector, Moonshiner and more. Rockstar have followed a similar business model to their hugely popular Grand Theft Auto Online, with regular updates and new content being drip fed into the game.

Speaking of online, for every big give there’s a little take. As Red Dead Redemption 2 joins Xbox Game Pass on 7th May, Grand Theft Auto V will be leaving on the same day. All of your progress will remain, so you can simply carry on where you left off by purchasing a full copy of the game, which is 20% off through Game Pass and on sale pretty regularly anyway. There’s also discounts to the microtransaction Shark Cards.
