The original 2004 Star Wars: Battlefront has been patched with multiplayer

Star Wars: Battlefront has been patched and now includes multiplayer. No, not Battlefront 2, that already had it, as did Battlefront, we’re talking about Star Wars: Battlefront, the original original game from way back in 2004.

Why this has been patched in sixteen years later is a mystery but we have seen a number of older Star Wars titles getting tweaks including Star Wars Episode I: Racer which is coming to PS4 and Switch. Maybe Disney are giving their video game partners a gentle nudge to try and generate a bit of extra revenue while cinemas are closed, who knows.

Here are the patch notes from Steam.

  • Online multiplayer on Steam has been added to the game. We also made the following changes to the game:
  • French, Italian, German, Spanish language support added
  • Additional audio support added
  • Addressed a number of menu and gameplay issues for a number of different screen sizes

It’s not all good news for Star Wars gamers, the eagerly awaited Star War Battlefront II: Battle on Scarif update has gone live but will be the last content released for the game. After 25 content drops since the game’s launch back in November 2017 the team are moving on though fans can expect the servers to stay online for “years” to come with regular community updates and in-game events still taking place.

Headlining this latest free content drop is a new map that brings Battlefront’s multiplayer action to the shores of Scarif, the planet that featured prominently in the final act of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

That isn’t the only thing fans have to look forward to. Age of Rebellion maps will now be playable in Supremacy and Instant Action, joining the other two Star Wars eras.

Not only that, DICE have expanded Battlefront II’s Instant Action mode for solo players. If you prefer being matched against bots or simply want to practice your skills then you can play access missions that place you in attack and defend scenarios with AI.

Here’s a detailed rundown of what the new update will include:

  • Scarif added as a new playable map on Co-Op Missions, Supremacy, Instant Action, Heroes Vs. Villains and Hero Showdown.

  • Supremacy and Instant Action are now available in the Age of Rebellion (Death Star II, Hoth, Yavin 4, Tatooine and Scarif).

  • New Missions (Attack) and Missions (Defend) modes added under Instant Action, allowing you to play Co-Op style maps as a single-player alongside AI.

  • Co-Op Missions are now available on the MC85 Star Cruiser and Resurgent-Class Star Destroyer.

  • Crait is now available on Heroes Vs. Villains and Hero Showdown.

  • New Episode IX-inspired appearances for Rey, Kylo Ren and Emperor Palpatine are now available to all players.

  • New appearances for Darth Maul and Rey are available to unlock via Milestones.
