Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 remaster is coming out this September

Activision have announced a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 remaster, the classic skating games coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on 4th September 2020.

If that announcement hasn’t given you a sever case of deja vu whiplash, then it really should. Don’t you remember Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD? It came to PS3, Xbox 360 and PC back in 2012!

That remaster was decent, recreating the original levels in Unreal Engine 3, but it was a step on the path to the truly awful THPS5. Can we can have fresh hope that this remaster will bring back the glory days of the franchise. The team in charge of the remaster is Vicarious Visions, whose excellent work on Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy shows they’re well up to the task of reviving a classic from the 90s. So no, this might not be as new and exciting as the sequel that was being rumoured, but it still holds a lot of potential.

They’re performing a similar task for this twin remaster, taking the original levels, skaters, tricks and more and bringing it flip-kicking and rail screaming into the modern day with levels that have been recreated from the ground up. They’re also bringing in features from the rest of the franchise, including reverts, lip tricks, wall plants and multiplayer, with support for both online and local couch multiplayer. Oh, and Create-A-Park and Create-A-Skater are back, with the ability to share your parks online with friends.

Here’s some before and after screenshots to salivate over:

Tony Hawk himself (or at least a guy that looks a lot like him), has naturally given the game his seal of approval: “The original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series is a big factor in the evolution of modern skateboarding tricks and inspiring many of the pro skaters you know and love today. I’m excited to help inspire a new generation of skateboarders and gamers – and existing fans – to grow the sport even further.”

The game is now available to pre-order, with doing so granting you access to the classic Warehouse Demo at some point ahead of the game’s launch.

  1. Fantastic news and the screenshots look great. Hoping this is a big success and results in remakes of the Tony Hawks: Underground games.

  2. Hi. Just out of interest how does the control method / gameplay compare to the Skate series which I loved! Never played a TH game but I’m interested in these and there nothing really skaty available at the moment (though Skate 3 still holds up VERY well for its age on Xbox one. Thanks.
