Dark Souls franchise hits 27 million sales, Dark Souls III reaches 10 million mark

From Software and Bandai Namco have confirmed that the Dark Souls franchise has reached the 27 million sales mark. The Dark Souls series started back in 2011 with the release of the first game in the trilogy. Of course, Dark Souls was essentially a follow up to From Software’s first foray into this territory Demon’s Souls, which released in 2009. Following Dark Souls, the sequel Dark Souls II was launched in 2014 while the most recent title Dark Souls III was released in 2016. In between those two titles From Software released Bloodborne for PS4.

In addition to the total sales of the franchise, Bandai Namco confirmed that Dark Souls III had reached 10 million sales since its launch.

It does seem like From Software is ready to leave the genre behind either. Last year, the studio revealed Elden Ring and that is a joint collaboration with author George R. R. Martin, the writer behind the A Song of Ice & Fire books aka Game of Thrones. Very little detail about Elden Ring has been released since its reveal but we do know that composer Yuka Kitamura will be composing the game’s soundtrack. She worked on the soundtracks for Bloodborne, Dark Souls II, Dark Souls III, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

We do know Elden Ring will be an open world title but there will not be towns to visit with ruins being the focus on exploring dungeons. Players will explore the world on foot and horseback. Elden Ring has been announced for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, however with no release date confirmed and so little news about the game those may not be the only platforms. With the release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X right around the corner it would not be surprising to learn that Elden Ring will be a cross generational title, especially if it is not near being ready for release.

  1. Great games, and what a challenge..! Still need to deal with the last few bosses in Bloodborne, and Dark Souls 2 and 3 are sitting in my backlog, if I remember correctly…
