Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida states he is not directing Final Fantasy XVI

There is no doubt that Square Enix will be releasing more Final Fantasy titles and one of them will more than likely be Final Fantasy XVI. For a little while now there have been rumours circulating that Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida is the director behind the next numbered entry to the series, and now he has addressed those rumours. The short answer is that all of that is incorrect and he will be working on Final Fantasy XIV for years to come. Responding to fans on a YouTube stream he said:

“Ah, looks like some kind of big fake news came out. I’ll say it clearly – it’s annoying. I’m still going to continue being in charge of FF14 for more years to come (as long as I don’t die from sickness or accident). So please ignore any non-official announcements. It’s so bothersome.”

Case dismissed then, I guess. Yoshida has been at the helm of Final Fantasy XIV since it re-emerged as A Realm Reborn following a disastrous launch. In that time the team led by Yoshida has turned the MMO around with millions now playing Final Fantasy XIV, and a lot of content with the latest being the Reflections in Crystal which continued the Nier crossover. There some speculation that Final Fantasy XIV will be coming to PS5 but that is yet to be confirmed.

Seeking an official comment from Square Enix, Polygon reached out and got the following PR response that said “while not a confirmation, Yoshida-san expressed a hope that Final Fantasy XIV Online may one day appear on the next generation of Sony console.”

That was the status in November, and there has been no update since then. Maybe there will be an announcement at the PS5 reveal event.
