Assetto Corsa Competizione for PS4 and Xbox One detailed, will be limited to 30fps and 20 cars on track

Kunos Simulazioni gave an overview of the console release of Assetto Corsa Competizione yesterday, the motorsports focussed follow up to their his sim racer Assetto Corsa. As with the console release of the original, it lags behind the PC release (this time by about a year) coming to PS4 and Xbox One next week on 23rd June.

For the PC version of the game, Kunos decided to make the jump to unreal Engine 4, building an enhanced version of the original’s physics and picking up the license for the GT World Challenge (then known as the Blancpain GT Series). If you love GT racing, then this is absolutely the game for you.

Speaking about the console version, the company have now detailed the number of concessions that have had to be made, though thankfully the physics and the game audio remain untouched from the PC version fo the game. Instead, it’s the graphics that will suffer.

Assetto Corsa Competizione will run at 30fps on all PS4 and Xbox One consoles – a fate similar to the games coming out of Milestone after they also made a jump to Unreal Engine 4. Here’s the run down of the resolutions and options.

  • Xbox One – 900p at 30fps
  • PS4 – 1080p at 30fps
  • PS4 Pro – 1800p upscaled at 30fps
  • Xbox One X – or 2160p at 30fps

There’s no word yet on support for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Through all of this, there will also be a limit on the number of AI drivers. On console this will be limited to 20 drivers both in single and multiplayer, while the PC version is able to handle up to 50.

Obviously we’re seeing Kunos butting into the limits of what the current generation of console is able to do, in particular with the limitations of the CPU power to handle AI and physics. While it’s fairly disappointing to see a reaction-based racing game and esports platform limited to 30fps, the top notch physics and simulation should help overcome that limitation.
